Mangaluru, Feb 6: In an incident which happened on Tuesday February 5, cash amounting to five lac rupees was robbed from railway passengers who had arrived at the city junction railway station at Kankanady on Tuesday February 5. In a swift operation, the police personnel succeeded in taking four accused into custody.

The police now are trying to check the veracity of the alleged incident.

A team of four had arrived here from Mumbai on Tuesday morning. It is said that the team had five lac rupees with them relating to fisheries dealings. This money was to be delivered to a person from the city. In the meanwhile, a person who called them asked them to come towards Pumpwell by hiring an auto rickshaw. When they were proceeding towards Pumpwell in an auto rickshaw, a gang of four which arrived in a WagonR car suddenly blocked the movement of the three-wheeler, and escaped after snatching away a bag containing cash from the passengers.

Within minutes of the robbery, an anonymous caller contacted the town station here to inform that a gang had robbed five lac rupees and was escaping in a car. The police asked the caller to visit the station and file complaint. But no one came to complain for long. A member of the team which was robbed came to the station later and filed complaint. During his questioning, he provided vague replies.

The police took the issue seriously and began operation. The police, based on records based on call received by the auto rickshaw passengers, found that the cellphone from which the call came was moving towards Udupi from Hejamady. They immediately alerted Udupi traffic police who stopped the vehicle near Kaup, and handed over four persons inside the vehicle to the city police here.

The four persons who came by the train were speaking in Hindi. It is however, suspected that they might be from Maharashtra. The four persons taken into custody by the Udupi police are from Bhatkal. As the incident has given rise to suspicion and several doubts, the police are subjecting the concerned to intensive questioning.
