Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Feb 7: A passenger travelling to Dubai by an Air India Express flight from the city on the morning of Thursday February 7, was found to be carrying foreign currency notes illegally.

During the frisking of a passenger named Abdul Hameed Kodiyamma at the international airport here, the security officials noticed that something was concealed inside the undergarments of the said passenger. They led him to the special checking room where he was subjected to thorough verification. During this check, it was detected that two bundles of US dollar currency notes worth 5000 dollars each were hidden inside the undergarments.

The passenger, along with the foreign currency notes worth 10,000 US dollars found in his possession, was handed over to customs officials for further action.

What is the Indian customs limit on the amount of cash that I can carry to India?

There is no limit to bring foreign exchange in India. However, the aggregate value of foreign currency notes in excess of USD 5000 or equivalent and the aggregate value of foreign exchange in the form of currency notes, bank notes or traveler's cheques in excess of USD 10,000 or its equivalent must be declared to the customs.
The limit for foreign currency notes is USD 3,000 and must be declared by filing CDF (Currency Declaration Form) if it exceeds the limit.

Any person residing outside India and visiting India may bring into India currency notes of Government of India and Reserve Bank of India notes up to an amount not exceeding Rs.25,000 (Rupees Twenty Five Thousand only) per person.

All this man need is a declaration of foreign currency above the allowable limit.
