Ballari, Feb 8: Police have arrested three suspects on charges of damaging ancient pillars at Hampi heritage site.
Two suspects hail from Bengaluru while the third is a youth from Hyderabad. It is said that police are on the lookout for another suspect from Bihar. The arrested suspects have reportedly confessed to their crime.
Police conducted operations in three teams to nab the suspects. One of the teams has gone to Bihar to find and arrest the suspect. Police have not divulged further details as the suspects have requested for protection.
Details of the incident
Miscreants had toppled and destroyed four pillars of the ancient structure behind Gajaraja School in Hampi. They had captured their act on their mobile phone. A person called Ayush Sahu had posted it on Instagram. But after being severely criticized, the video was deleted.
Meanwhile a Bengaluru based person shared the video on social networking site with the title ‘Save Hampi’. The police and the department of archaeology woke up after the incident went viral. Bellari superintendent of police Arun Rangarajan visited the spot and conducted investigations. Several organisations have expressed anguish and held protests against the vandalism.
