CBI refused to probe death of Manipuri student in UP: CM

Imphal, Feb 27 (IANS): Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren informed the Assembly on Wednesday that the Central Bureau of Investigation had found the proposed inquiry into the death of a Manipuri student in Uttar Pradesh (UP) "not suitable".

Biren said he had requested his UP counterpart to expedite the inquiry in the case.

Pravesh Chanam was found dead in Noida in UP on September 10, 2017.

According to media reports, Chanam might be a victim of a criminal gang engaged in illegal organ trading.

He went missing from a concert held in Noida after which his brother filed a complaint with the police. Reports said that the police, instead of handing over the body to his family, allegedly took it to a far off place and cremated it as an "unclaimed body".

Meanwhile, the People's Action Committee has called a 24-hour general strike from Thursday midnight demanding a probe into the case.

Many civil organisations are extending support to the general strike. Biren had appealed to the organisations against the strike.
