Mangalore, Feb 8:
Orchid Art Gallery, which has promoted artworks of young and budding artists for the last two years in the city, has now been shifted to a spacious and more attractive place at Kumudavati Building in Balmatta here.  The new gallery was inaugurated on Sunday February 8 by the Bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza by lighting the lamp along with other dignitaries on the dais.

“For a common man, art gallery is not at all a headline stuff as there is no glamour attached to nor it has a commercial angle. Aesthetic sense is required to appreciate art.  Art has the potential to bring change in the society," said Bishop D'Souza, while inaugurating the art gallery.  He congratulated William Pais, proprietor of the gallery for taking this bold step.

"Most of the problems we people face in the state are because of the fact that we are let down by the judiciary," said Justice M F Saldanha, retired High Court judge of Karnataka.  He was speaking as the chief guest at the function. "This is a sacred moment.  This concept must grow irrespective of what is happening in Mangalore today.  This place is a symbol of hope.  Our institutions must periodically visit this art gallery," said Saldanha while offering a blueprint for the future of the art gallery.

Veteran artist and former president of Lalita Kala Acdemy of the state of Karnataka Peter Lewis inaugurated the 20-day art exhibition of three Delhi-based artists Arnab Mitra, Sushnato Chattopadhyay and Deb Dulal Datta.  The exhibition will be on until February 28.

"Always risks are present invariably along with scope for growth.  Because of risks we have prospered in the fields of science and technology and similarly Orchid Art Gallery will see success soon," said Fr Denis D'Sa, administrator, Fr Muller Medical College.  `There are so many dividing factors in Mangalore.  Art can unite and heal the wounds.  Art is a mirror of our society," he further added.

William Pais, proprietor of the gallery welcomed the gathering and explained that the changing art scenario of Mangalore has necessitated a bigger space for the works of our artists.

Prof Ravishankar compered the whole event.  Swapna Noronha proposed vote of thanks.
