Mumbai : Valentines Show No Fear to Moral Police

Mumbai : Valentines Show No Fear to Moral Police

Mumbai, Feb 15: If St Valentine was alive today in 'modern' India, he would have been martyred all over again - this time by India's moral police. February 14 may be celebrated as a secular festival by lovers all over the world.

But on Saturday, it became a rallying cry for thugs across the country masquerading as the guardians of 'Indian culture'. Lovers mostly kept a low profile as right-wing Hindutva groups, especially in smaller urban centres, patrolled the streets in search of couples indulging in 'objectionable' behaviour.

In Mumbai, it was evident that couples weren't going to be browbeaten by the moral police, as they turned out in large numbers in the city's pubs and popular rendezvous spots for lovers, such as Bandra Bandstand and Juhu Beach. This was made easier by the large number of cops out on the streets.

In Pune, which has a high student population, Shiv Sena workers performed mock marriages of four couples near the Khadakwasla dam, a popular picnic spot. They also chased away couples from Peshwe Park, and thrashed a boy and assaulted a girl for protesting against them.

In Ujjain, Bajrang Dal activists brutally assaulted a brother and sister whom theymistook for a pair in love.

In Gwalior, more than 30 Shiv Sena activists were arrested while they were hunting for (human) couples in the zoo. In Bhopal, police arrested 11 Shiv Sena workers and six activists of the Sanskriti Bachao Manch, who were found loitering at Chinar Park looking for couples to harass.

In Jind, Haryana, a police sub-inspector, Moola Ram, was suspended after he allegedly beat up a young couple and dragged the girl by the hair to the police station. He had found her with her boyfriend in a hotel room. On reaching the police station, he could not find the relevant IPC section under which to book the couple. In Belgaum in Karnataka, Sri Rama Sene activists raided a V-Day party at a software firm, Katwa Infotech, attacking people and ransacking furniture.

Meanwhile Mangalore, the epicentre of the recent offensive from the moral police, resembled a ghost town, with couples keeping a low profile. Lovebirds in Bangalore, on the other hand, had a relatively peaceful V-Day, thanks to the preventive detention of Sri Rama Sene activists, including that of their leader Pramod Muthalik.

One of the comments brought out concern about media being biasaed only against BJP-allied Ram Sene, and not violence that is happening elsewhere. He/She cites crimes in Jaipur involving student lives, etc. Obviously these crimes are not organised. Such news is usually carried in tabloid type media in great detail and probably stark detail/exaggeration. In no way do such events pose danger to national security as the Senes do. This is the elementary difference between the two types of crime.

Dear Mangaloreans...the real ones(not Shri Ram sene) Why have you not had the guts to come openly and celebrate your love as usual? The only way to defeat any anti social elements is by all section of society to come out in defense and support the victims.

Its now.Institutions, Banking industry, Lawyers assoc.,Nursing, Hoteliers, Business houses, Police, Govt. employees all should come out openly and give these goons a trashing once for all. Trust me the Politicians will suddenly shun them as they no longer will be vote getters.

I appeal to the Hindus specially to come out in great numbers as its their faith and culture is being insulted in the name of Ram.(Attacking the weak and women are not part of that culture or is It?)

Great to see how younger generation is embracing modern, western values while rejecting the old, outdated cultural views rooted in Pagan traditions. Hindu hooligans are clearly defeated by our intelligent youth and their strong western values. Jai Hind!

How many of these self-proclaimed custodians of morality and culture command respect in their neighborhood for their lifestyle which should be above reproach? We have too many people around who thrive on their neighbor's shortcomings but do not have anything to give to the world which is called their own.Our country is not short of morality and culture. We are only short of Nobel Laureates and Olympic medalists.

Yesterday some Shiv Sainiks married off a young boy to a donkey in Maharastra. To all well meaning people of this country that young boy is a symbol of our freedom which is being slowly destroyed by those goons. I would consider a donkey to be a wiser animal when compared to the goons and their leaders.

They definitely do not have anything in their brains. We saw the entire bunch of barking dogs and their bravado during the terrorist attacks. They were nowhere to be seen. It was the common people of Bombay that stood up to the terrorists, whereas these specimens of the worst order that human kind has produced must have been hiding behind skirts. Its not Shiv sena but Napunsak sena.

Dear Alva, It is true that there exists goondaism on innocent people. If media starts to write everything, there wont be left any trees (for paper production) etc. Daijiworld is predominantly a Mangalorean website where it publishes the news happening in and around Mangalore. I believe Daijiworld is a secular media and we are proud of that. Alva, how come you know that a boy and girl was beaten up in Rajasthan?? It would have been published in some newspapers, right? Have you been to Rajasthan to look into all the newspapers and checked?? Oooww, its a dream...Wake up!

By observing the situation on 14th Feb, It seems that the administration had given freedom to the so called guardians of 'Indian Culture' to harass the couples.By this way the young generation is misguided in their goals and aims while they face the world. The victims of these kind of acts likely to become rebels in the society.

I stayed in Mangalore as a student 8 yrs. ago, though not belonging to this place by tradition and culture, I never felt out of place in this beautiful city. But when i read disturbing articles of this peace loving city, my heart bleeds. Firstly I wanna ask these goons what's Indian culture??? let them describe it on national television or through newspapers.

Its shameful for a CM to say he dosent like or agrees with pub culture, who the hell asked him this question in the first case, If he dosent like it let him publish it in his party manesfto before the next elections. He is a PUBLIC SERVANT, taken up this post to SERVE people for the betterment and upliftment of society rather than creating goons and supprting them in their atrocities on women.

Speaking ENGLISH isn't our culture, why don't we start with sanskrit, why not dress in traditional attire to show our culture. these two are the basics of culture, which we don't follow. India is too big a country to implent so called Indian culture. Shocking to say our country can't have a uniform civil code. Our's is a secualar country, treating all citizens equally. Let's refresh our memories by opening our school books which mentions these words of unity, love and peace.

Dear all commentators, raise your voice against Mangalore City Corporations steep increase in houses and flats tax. I condemn the Mayor and the corporators for increasing taxes. Everywhere prices of commodities are coming down and the BJP led city corporation is senselessly increasing taxes and distributing funds to its associates and goondas, Ridiculous administration.

Any type of terrorism must be protested. If some moral police brigade want to terrorize people, we all must condemn their terrorism. India is a plural country and no one should impose any particular culture on people. If people want to adapt culture they should do so as long as it is permitted within the legal framework. Bajrang Dal or Sri Rame Sene or Shiv Sainiks should mind their own business.
