Kundapur: Broken Statue of St Bernadette at Gangolli Church Shocks Locals

Kundapur, Mar 1: The residents of Gangolli, a village near Kundapur woke up on Sunday March 1 to the disturbing news that a statue of St Bernadette at the 400-year-old Church of Immaculate Conception, had been broken by unknown miscreants.

The statue was installed in the grotto. Its pieces were discovered in a gutter by some devotees of the church. The incident has marred the usually peaceful and serene atmosphere on the church precincts.

However, the situation is under control and locals claim that it is an attempt by anti-social elements to disturb the peace in the area.

Sources claim that it is an isolated incident which is not to be linked  with anything else. Strangely, the other three statues in the church compound were left untouched.

A police squad accomanied by a sniffer dog and fingerprint experts inspected the area in search of clues.

Madhukar Pawar, superintendent of police, Udupi district, K N Ramesh, assistant commissioner, Kundapur, and C K Shashidhar, deputy superintendent, Kundapur range, visited the spot and assessed the situation. Vicar of Kundapur Varado Fr Alban D’Souza, parish priest of Gangolli Fr Alfonse D’Lima, and former MLA Byndoor Gopal Poojary appealed to the people to maintain law and order and assured them of bringing the culprits to justice

Among those present were Jerald Crasta, Helen Rebebro, A J Bothello, Kiran Crasta, Edward Cardin, Felix Fernandez, Herik Gonsalvies, Michel D’Souza, Vinod Fernandez, Michel Rebero, Kundapur Varado Legal Committee co-ordinator Alvin Quardres, planning committee co-ordinator Valerian Menezes, Catholic Sabha former president Dr Sony D’Costa, Darik Crasta, Johnson Almeida.

Fr Anil Cornelio Trasi, Fr Philip Nere Aranha Padukone, deputy commissioner of Udupi  Hemalatha, and Byndoor MLA Laxminarayana, visited  the spot.

Speaking to Daijiworld, Udupi SP appealed to the public to stay calm and said that no communal touch should be given to the incident.

I read the above report and agree that what happened is a very sad incident. My main reason for writing this comment is that I am researching my family history, and I believe that I may be related to the Rebero family. I have a relative named Leslie Rebero who was born in Multan in 1915, and wondered if the Rebero's mentioned in the report are related to Leslie Rebero.

It is not only shocking but very sad moment to hear about this incidents in a remote peaceful corner of Mangalore. The anti-social elements are moving freely in the City without any fear of punishment by those concerned as the Govt is totally unconcerned about what is happening under the present rulers of the State. Christians are peace-loving community and these fanatics take advantage of this. However God is great and His punishment will come upon them during their life time in some way or other and these fanatics will realise this. R Fernandes

Dear Sathish your understanding of God differs a lot from the God in the Bible which says forgive those who trespass against us (the Our Father prayer) as Jesus thought. Also Jesus said bless those who persecute you. What's the difference between them and us is we have the message of Divine Unconditional Love and the Grace to forgive.

This is the work of Cowards who have done this in the Night. New Statues can be installed but the People's Unity cannot be threatened and broken. We always say listen from one ear and leave it from the other ear. In the same way ignore this incident and install a new one. How many they will break 1, 5, 10 or 20 and they will get tired.

Good work! You have opened the doors of hell for your selves (this is what I call digging ones own grave). As one gentleman rightly said, you can destroy the material things in life (which in itself is never long lasting as your own life) but the spirit is (as would be with you too). So be it and be prepared to face the consequences and the wrath of the lord. We as christians can only pray that enlightenment comes to all of you who do not understand that the need of the hour is peace and prayer if you do not understand this....you are in for the worse to happen.

Our Lady appeared to Bernadette for the first time in Lourdes on 11 February 1858. I was at the grotto on 08 February 2009. The temperature was zero degree celsius. Thousands of pilgrims come to the grotto for physical and inner healing. Some of them take a dip in the water. Practically all carry water from the spring. I too had the privilege to take a dip in the water and brought 1.5 litre water from the spring to distribute among my Hindu, Muslim and Catholic friends. By destroying the statue of Bernadette the graces which she and billions of pilgrims received since 1858 cannot be destroyed. May St. Bernadette send abundant blessings on those who destroyed her statue. Those who try to destroy material things will not succeed to destroy the spirit.
