Mangalore: State Women’s Forum Condemns Harassment of Women

Mangalore, Mar 10: “If the harassment of women continues, it will lead to women having to use spoons as weapons”, said Nasima Fathima, secretary, Karnataka Women’s Forum.
 
She was speaking at a protest organized by the Muslim central committee along with the Popular Front of India in front of the deputy commissioner’s (DC) office, condemning the harassment of women in the district including the recent police atrocity on women at Suratkal.
 
“We used to hear about atrocities on Dalits, but now the targets are women in Dakshina Kannada, which is called a literate district.

She said that the women are called goddesses here but still they are beaten up in the name of culture and religion and added that the state government is not good enough to protect ladies as the harassment of these people led Udupi MLA’s wife Padmapriya to end her life.
 
Ali Hasan, secretary, Muslim Central Committee, in his introductory speech said, “When the BJP government came to power in the state, such incidents of harassment began. But we will not tolerate such incidents”.
 
Pattabhirama Somayaji, leader, Karnataka Komu Sauharda Vedike, said that the policemen who tortured the women should be dismissed from the department.
 
Razak Kemmar, member, Popular Front of India, and P B D’Sa, district president, People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), were also present.
