Mangalore, Mar 18: Mangalore continues to be in the news for the wrong reasons on the third consecutive day. In a fresh incident, a large crowd gathered at Thokkottu, near Ullal, on Wednesday March 18, protesting against the alleged atrocities on a 10-year-old boy by Ullal police sub- inspector.

The crowd demanded immediate action against the police officer and blocked traffic for a while in the locality. People from Thokkottu and Ullal joined the protest in front of the Sahara Hospital.

The Ullal station police sub-inspector H Shivaprakash allegedly beat up Shahal Ibrahim (10), son of U M  Rafiq, a resident of Melangady near Mastikatte, as the boy was returning home from tuition class on his bicycle.

Shahal, who has been admitted to Sahara  Hospital said, “I  crossed the road with my  bicycle and was talking with my friend Nakir. At that time a police jeep came and the inspector beat me with his ‘lathi’. I ran home.”

Shahal has lathi marks on his head and leg. He is the eldest son of U M Rafiq and is a fifth standard student in Beary’s Public School.

His father said, “We never beat our child at home and we do not tolerate him being beaten in school also. We really feel bad on seeing the lathi marks on his body.”

Additional superintendent of police R  Dileep and deputy superintendent of police Jayanth Shetty visited the hospital and met the boy.

They assured his parents of swift action against the concerned officer upon receiving a complaint from the parents of Shahal.

A five member team led by DYFI leader Muneer Katipalla and Ramachandra Uchchil has submitted a memorandum to Gopal Hosur, inspector general of police, western range.  He has assured them of action in 24 hours.

This is not the way to treat a ten year old boy...even if he had done something wrong he is still a minor..adults commit mistake and they walk away.....and still the police do not do anything...its a bad record for the police in Mangalore

Anurag Rai, you say "How can you blindly trust the boys version of story? What prompted the inspector to hit the boy? He must not be crazy to act without any provocation or wrong doing by the boy. Lets wait for the police version." Hey! are u nuts? you think the police neeed an excuse, instead they just wait to lash out out the weak and helpless, because they cant do any thing against the strong. Look at the boy. Even if he had to do something wrong, this is not the way to dicipline a 10 year old. What if this had to happen to your very own? Its easy to speak. but very difficult when it happens to your dear ones.

The story in another news medium says the boys cycle came across the police jeep and police jeep ran off the road to avoid the cycle and was about to fall in gutter. The inspector hit the boy in anger. (This hitting is completely wrong as police also cant take law to their hand). What surprises me lot of readers giving communal colour to this and unnecessarily bringing Sangh parivar into this. What we have to question is wisdom of this boys parents who allowed him to go in cycle in NH 17. We very well know haw the express buses go here.

Seems like this sub inspector of police is not police officer for all the citizens, he is acting as a activist of the saffron brigade. He should be sacked from the job and this young boy should be given justice. John, This is not how we teach civilization to our kids?

I wonder, no, we wonder, if the said unruly, so-called Officer has children of his own, or, did he fight in his house that day and then took off his temper at this child. Parade him publicly, let all know what he is. Sorry, but police have no feelings and go on doing such brutal acts. They take out their temper on innocent folks and not on real culprits most of the time.

The police has no right to manhandle any one. Only after producing at court and obtaining policy custody for interrogation they may use some tactics. But they cant injure any one. Now this is just 10 year old boy. Dont look at the community to which he belongs. Just look at his age and the crime he has done.

Its no way justified for brutal assault by the police. If a boy has done a crime, which is punishable if he is an adult, then too they are not punished, instead they are tried in a juvenile court and would be sent to re habilitation centers. We should condemn and protest such acts of spineless police. We should treat human as human and not as hindu/muslim/christian. The blood/feelings/pain and sensation are the same in all human beings.

Pre planned atrocities , crimes & terrorism by so called soldiers against Muslim minority from one side & Pre planned attack , humiliation , insult , horrific atrocities against them from the part of Police who are supposed to provide all the assistance and helping hand to any one who is in trouble , to any one who is in need of such helps , protect all innocent Indians from being attacked by others , protect their lives , properties etc... – irrespective of their religions , caste and colour , try to keep law and order , try to achieve confidence of public , to be polite and loyal to them , understand that they have to carry out their duties honoring Indian constitution , for example and not limited to providing an helping hand if children , women and elder people if they fall in need of such helps to cross the road , to try to reach them to other side of the road safely , But the actions of Indian police against people , especially against Muslims are negative , cruel and deplorable . It is vary sad to know about subject crime committed by Police against Muslims - If it is committed against any member of other religions it is also condemnable irrespective of his religion - . Let us know what are the justifications of the police in question for his brutality against the innocent boy ?

Really shame on our trusted police dept. In our great peace lovers city is becoming wrost because of jobless moral police (no identity) in one end and on other side becasue of one or two in each of this dept. the whole dept. is taking black dot and also in the minds of public. We (public) have to organise our security people (police)ouresleves without involving the cheap politicians and any religious oriented people. Hope to see Mangalore by peace and green city.
