Goa CEO orders probe into priest's viral speech

Panaji, Apr 15 (IANS): The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Goa has ordered a probe into a viral video, in which a Catholic priest is seen slandering the BJP as an anti-minority party and saying that the late Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar suffered from pancreatic cancer as a wrath of God.

A spokesperson for the CEO said that the South Goa District Magistrate, who is also the Returning Officer, has been directed to probe the video. "The South Goa District Magistrate has been ordered to probe whether the contents of the speech violate the model code of conduct," the spokesperson said.

Earlier on Sunday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wrote to the Election Commission (EC) demanding a probe into the controversial sermon delivered by the parish priest Father Conceicao D'Silva.

D'Silva accused the BJP of harassing the minorities and urged his parishioners not to vote for the party.

"The said video clip depicts a priest addressing the people within a religious institution and creating an atmosphere of hate and fear against a particular political party and a specific religion," BJP Panaji Mandal General Secretary Vishnu Naik said in the complaint to the CEO.

"This matter needs a thorough investigation and the said priest must be booked for spreading hatred and destabilising religious harmony," said the letter.

In the undated video, D'Silva also spoke about coal dust pollution in the port town of Vasco da Gama, 35 km from Panaji.

"It (coal dust) is all over, in the food, water, houses. People protested, held morchas and meetings but Parrikar did not pay heed. His pockets were filled. Therefore God gave him cancer," he alleged.

"Parrikar had even tried to take away school holidays. And he died in suffering. Pancreatic cancer is the worst cancer. Those who cross the path of God are invariably punished," he said.

Asked for a comment, Secretary to Archbishop Fr. Loiola Pereira said: "I am aware of the video and the Bishop's House has been informed about it."

The priest is well within his rights to express his opinion like any other free citizen of India. He is also under obligation to protect the people who are entrusted to his care.

However regarding the rest of the theme about Parrikars sickness, I beg to differ. God cannot give sickness , because he does not have it. God is absolute good .
Only a demon can give sickness.

As an individual citizen of Indian democracy the priest has all the rights to express his pain and suffering incurred by any party and bring to the notice of his people. The priest has concern for his community therefore he is expressing his openion not to vote for bjp. Today bjp leaders are openly dividing hindus and other minority communities in the society. It is totally agaist the spirit of democracy. Today it is the fact that christian minority is suffering due to spread of hatred against Christians by accusing falsely regarding conversion. Actually those people should be booked under the law. But they are freely continuing their divissive politics. Just because they belong to majority can they do so?! Is it not the murder of democracy? People should ban such parties and people who promote violance agaist minorities. For India parties are not primary. Democracy and constitution are primary. Since most of the people donot know what is democracy give importance to party agendas than Indian constitution. Once govt is formed it should not follow what party says. They should safeguard the democracy and constitution. But what is happening in India is survival of the fittest

We are no one to judge others sickness. Though the secular people are aggrieved due to the
recent developments of dictatorship in a democratic govt. we need to just watch and pray that the newly elected sensible leaders may take all citizens of this country under one umbrella and give equal opportunities to all citizens without naming any caste/religion. It is always good to advise the voters accordingly of their right to vote for the right candidate.

In 2014, BJP did the same thing. Instilled fear in Hindus that Congress is upto converting the entire nation to Christianity. Though its not true that Parrikar got cancer as a punishment, its a common practice to bring God as convenient in giving examples for all religious preachers.

You got it all wrong Sir.
Our Prime Minister gets foreign funds as FDI in Indian Industries.
The ones under scrutiny and stopped were brought in and used for conversion like things to rupture the smooth fabric of religious tolerance in India!!!

    Chowkidaar Shankar,

If you understand the process, you would not have put this comment at all. Actually, its the opposite. We the church-goers voluntarily contribute when we go to church services, which is accounted for and taxes paid since its the income earned. Thereafter, its channeled to good works that are carried out by the church. Part of it is also going to the Pope so that He helps poor countries where missionaries work for the upliftment of the poor. This is a worldwide process, not in India alone.

India is no more a poor country like Africa, Afghanistan. Indians are better off and can help other poor countries. As such, Modi could do nothing to the church operations in India. We Indians are liberated citizens, Modi need not tell us what we should do and what we shouldn't.

Well, if you are free, do keep a tab on Shri Shri Ravishankar's activities in the US or Baba Ramdev's European Island that bring them income and do investigate about how they are abiding by the taxation Modi imposed on common NREs around the globe after coming to power.
