Mangaluru: Rain and storm leave trail of devastation in DK, Kodagu districts

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Apr 25: Several parts of Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu districts experienced good rainfall on Wednesday April 24 evening. Strong wind accompanied by rain left a number of houses damaged in Sullia taluk.

Places like Sonangeri, Jalsur, Kanakamajalu in Sullia taluk etc got good rainfall. Electric poles which fell across Jalsur and Sonangeri roads resulted in snapping of power supply to several villages in the taluk at night besides creating traffic problems. Tahsildar Abdul Kunhi and village accountant visited the places where the rain had wreaked havoc. Power supply to Subramanya temple and surrounding areas got cut as power line was severed after a tree fell at Kadaba Hosmmath.

A few areas in Sullia taluk also got hailstorms besides strong wind. Roofs of several houses in Sullia town were damaged as a result, and a house belonging to Balakrishna at Bettampady was extensively damaged. A tree got uprooted on the cattle shed belonging to Abdul Haji in Jayanagar, Sullia. Tiles of a few houses including those of Tirumaleshwari, Radhakrishna, and Janardhana were blown away. A coconut tree which fell on the house of Usha inflicted heavy damages.

The roof of a government school at Gummanakilli near Kushalnagar, Kodagu district, was blown away. Classrooms were covered by water and furniture was damaged. Items in the office too were destroyed.

Fallen trees also affected traffic at a few places. Over ten electric poles suffered damages due to wind and fallen trees.

Puttur and surrounding areas received only light drizzle. The city was enveloped in cloudy weather.

The meteorological department has said that several areas in the state are likely to get rain for three days beginning April 30. It said that it was earlier felt that fall in atmospheric pressure witnessed during the last two days may result in increased rain in southern interior Karnataka, but this prediction has been changed as it has changed direction. Now it will not have too much impact on the state. Still, the southern interior Karnataka and some regions in the coast might receive rain for three days from April 30, said director of Natural Disaster Response Force, Srinivas Reddy. He said that the atmospheric depression and surface wind intensity have come down. He added that some places in south interior parts of Karnataka will experience cloudy weather for two more days.
