Bengaluru: Grilling of Mahesh Hegde of ‘Postcard News’ continues

Bengaluru, Apr 25: The police personnel of criminal investigation department (CID), who had reportedly taken co-founder of 'Postcard’ web portal, Mangaluru-based Mahesh Vikram Hegde, for having published a fake letter purported to have been written by home minister, M B Patil to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi was questioned on Wednesday too.

Hegde, who arrived at the CID office at around 12 pm, was questioned for over four hours. It is said that he was questioned about how the letter referred above came into his hands, and whether he checked it for its genuineness, the police of the economic offences wing of CID stated. 

In the meantime, MP Shobha Karandlaje, though a tweet, has resented the move of the government to investigate Hegde. She said that the state government has enforced emergency in the state and that Hegde was arrested for exposing the falsehood of Gandhi family. Hemant Nimbalkar, inspector general of police, CID economic offences wing, clarified that Hegde was questioned in connection with the incident and that he was not arrested. Nimbalkar said that more light on the letter could be thrown once the entire investigation is completed.

Earlier reports had said that Mahesh and Surti Bellakki from Garaga village, Dharwad, were, picked up from Virajpet, Kodagu district by the CCB police and taken to Bengaluru for questioning. The two were accused of misusing their portal as if to lend support to certain charges being made against minister, M B Patil, relating to demand for separate Lingayat religion.

    People who create and spread fake news are to be treated as pests.

    How come this case comes under Crime Investigation Department, if proven guilty, he should be tried under IPC sections 153 or 295 for misleading people, infact there is no specific law for spreading fake news, the above sections can be statutory .....
