Year of tolerance: In a first, UAE gives birth certificate to interfaith couple's child

Abu Dhabi, Apr 28 (IANS): The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has issued a birth certificate to a baby born to an inter-faith Indian expat couple, the media reported on Sunday.

According to the UAE's marriage rules for expatriates, a Muslim man can marry a non-Muslim woman; however, a Muslim woman cannot marry a non-Muslim man, reports the Khaleej Times.

Kiran Babu, the Hindu Sharjah-based expat, married Sanam Saboo Siddique, who is Muslim, in Kerala in 2016.

The couple arrived in the UAE in 2017 and encountered no difficulty with the visa process. It was only when their baby was born last July that they faced an unexpected situation.

"I have an Abu Dhabi visa. I get my insurance coverage. But after the baby's delivery, the birth certificate was rejected as I am a Hindu. Then, I applied for a no-objection certificate through the court. The trial went on for four months but my case was rejected," Babu told the Khaleej Times.

Left with no option, he tried a way out during the amnesty period which the UAE government ran from August 1 to December 31, 2018. Visa violators were given the chance to either leave the country without paying fines or adjust their residency status.

"The amnesty was a window of hope. The Indian Embassy helped with the provision of an outpass. But the baby was denied immigration clearance as there was no data or registration number to prove her birth."

But on April 14, a day before the Hindu festival of Vishu, the family received the birth certificate for their baby. "I am told that this is the first case where the rule has been amended."

Embassy Counsellor M. Rajamurugan said the ground-breaking ruling will serve as a precedent for future cases.

    Hello Mangalorean, Doha/ Mangalore,

So u agree to the UAE rule where woman should not be treated equally.

Please explain- A Muslim man can marry Non- Muslim where as a woman cannot.

And knowlege about Dubai one can read the reports as to how happy people there are.. Reason for happiness is people travel for Bangladesh Phillipines and Sri Lanka and they consider it to be happy. Start interviewing the wider community or people who have left UAE, Oman or Qatar see what they have to say once they leave the country

And concrete jungles would be appreciated if it was being built by Arabs.. Unfortunately they are being built by Aus, France or Germany.

So educating yourself would be appreciated.

I do not understand the logic behind the year of tolerance, and I have the following questions:
    1. Why should any government in any part of the world decide who marries whom?
    2. It is not the governments duty to regulate marriage in any way shape or form?
    3. Why is a Muslim man allowed to marry a non Muslim woman, whereas that same freedom is not given to a Muslim woman to marry a non Muslim man?
    4. The couple arrived in the UAE were expatriates and as they are not even UAE citizens, so how can the government interfere in their lives?

It is a very bad situation and rules of a country for not giving a birth certificate to a child ,for not its fault but parents religion matters.what will a baby do without birth certificate ?Go back in mothers womb?and wait till rules change?I dont think this babys problemsmay not end with this I feel.I find when a baby is born ,they should give a birth certificate when and where it is born, without parents religion ,caste specific things to give importance.religion ok.But not as a barrier.Hope this ends by now.wish that baby all the best in future.

Arif, Mangalore - before commenting read the article think over it and then proceed.

1stly How dumb is the rule where a Muslim man can marry a Non Muslim woman , but different rules apply to women.
Secondly the couple is an expat who is legally mareied with a marriahe certificate and they cannot issue a certificate.

I reckon those dumb rulers need to educate themselves 1st learn how marriage works than building concrete jungles.

Sitting in at the corner of the world has no knowledge what is going on in Dubai or UAE. Don't be jealous of concrete jungles are being built in Dubai. Those residing in Dubai enjoy their life better than any country in the world. UAE is safe and protective for every one. Their rulers are exemplary. Enjoy your life and please do not criticize without having complete knowledge.......

My friend, how is “enjoying life in Dubai” got anything to do with this stupidity of the rule that a Muslim woman cannot marry a non-Muslim man? As if, a Muslim woman do not have a natural right to choose her life partner!!

And please stop praising the rulers as if they are demi-gods. The system of monarchy is an inherently discriminatory system as if one family is more important than rest of the people that make up the country.

Every country has its set of rules which are meant to be followed. Your knowledge seems to be limited about rules and regulations of each country. If anybody from UAE brings beef and eats at Mumbai always airport, he will be jailed for such x years . You can’t say he brought it legally from his country.
Don’t be limited with things . Try to know many unknown things .

If Indians had learned from this simple example, Ankit Saxena would have been alive and happily married today. He is the unfortunate victim of such discriminatory and biased custom.
