Bengaluru: Forced to study subject disinterested in, student commits suicide

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, May 4: A girl student, who reportedly was under pressure to pursue the study of interior design which was not a subject of her interest, hanged herself. The victim has been identified as Karma Dema (21), a native of Bhutan.

Karma Dema, it is said, took this extreme step as she did not like to study interior design but was forced to pursue that course. She was a student of Acharya School of Design at Soladevanahalli in the outskirts of the city. She was found hanging in the college hostel on Thursday May 2.

It is gathered that the girl student, on her return from the college at 12.15 pm that day, locked herself in the hostel room. Her roommates who tried to enter the room knocked at the door for long but got no response. Sensing something fishy, they got in touch with the hostel officials. Thereafter, the police were informed.

The hostel room was broken open in the presence of police, and it was found that the girl student was hanging. During their preliminary investigations, the police did not find any suicide note. However, they got the indication that Karma Dema was frustrated at having been pressurized to undergo interior design course. Her subject of interest was journalism.

The victim's parents, T B Chetri, a teacher by profession, and mother, Nerupa, reached Bengaluru on Friday. They told the police that Dema had spoken to her mother on Wednesday night and there was no indication of her disturbed state of mind. The parents, who are in a state of disbelief and shock, also claimed that they had no idea why their daughter took this extreme step.

You know what... If she really thought suicide was the answer to that silly problem then probably she deserved to die. One less idiot in this world. Some people don't have a meal for this evening.

RIP. It is very sad to see such young girl lost her life. Most of the asian parents force thier kids by parents to study what thier relatives and neighbors have done rather asking their child of their interest of thier subject or field. Recently I have met a high school student who likes to become a cook but the parents against his will just because most thier families are doctors and engineers. It is a pressure on kids enforced by family members totaLy unacceptable.. hope this girl example may enlighten parents to see the reality of their kids and interest they like to pursue their career.

Rest in peace Dema... Why you students don't think of your parents before committing such things??? Other reasons are more stronger than the love of your parents? Parents don't have the right to express their wish what their son/dauhhter should become? Condolences to the bereaved family.

During the course of more than a decade and half of interviewing and interactions with students, I am sorry to say that parents have yet to learn that it is no more about their children being engineers and doctors. India has now opened up to so many countless opportunities and children should be allowed to pursure their dreams. When will we learn and when will so many innocent lives be

I agree with your comment but the mentality of the children has changed. We are in the different world and we can no way compare to the present situation what these young and even old people are going through.

very sad .When not parents forced her who s the one forced her?Insread of simply suecide, she could have left the college or take a bold step and do something else,go to another college to study her own.One shouldnt throw own life for such small things .Life is very important and very costly ,When does these students realize this.?Now parents must be feeling guilty for not knowing her problems. Also a great shock to loose the child which they brought up for years and educated.May God give them enough strenght to bear this pain and heartfelt sympathy to the family.May her soul rest in peace.

No need to check with anyone. A person with common sense can know that if you are forced to do something you will only be a fool and a failure at it. Rahul Gandhi is the perfect example for that.

Just wanting to be a doctor is not sufficient to become one. The person should have that much interest and ready to take much efforts and study hard.

How very sad that another life is gone for trifling reasons. Younger people seem unable to bear failures and take extreme steps to remove themselves from the world of ambition. Several others take lives of others for selfish motives, and this has been a regular feature reported in Daijiworld. These others are unfit to live in society.
