Water woes continue in Udupi and Mangaluru

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru/Udupi, May 5: Water rationing and water supply woes are continuing in both the districts. The Baje Dam that supplies water to the city of Udupi is completely dried up. In order to supply water for the city of Udupi by pumping water through dredging, two days of time is required. So there will not be water supply in the city on May 5 and 6. According to the municipal commissioner water supply to the city of Udupi may resume on May 7.

The water level in the Baje dam was less than 1.25 meters on Saturday, May 4. If the administration does not wake up and explore alternative solutions, the situation will worsen. The real issue of water supply to the city of Udupi will be known on Sunday, May 5. At present, water is supplied once in three days. However, in certain areas, people have to wait for water. In some places water is not supplied since a week. Places which are on a high zone, are not getting water as the force of water that is being pumped is not enough to reach high zone areas.

There is around four feet of silt accumulation in the Swarna River. The work of removing this also is not done. The administration is just buying time so that this work will be postponed till the rainy season, after which there is no need to carry out this work. It is said that if the silt would have been removed in proper time, this situation of acute water shortage would not have arrived.

The water woes in the city of Udupi assumed serious proportions in April and May months of 2017. In 2018, the problem did not take serious turn as it rained in the month of May itself. However, the situation in the current year is alarming.

Though there are plenty of tankers waiting to supply water, there is no source of water in the city. The tanker owners are requesting the public to inform them of any water source, so that they can supply water to needy people.

Anand Kallolikar, municipal commissioner says, "In order to supply water after dredging two days of time period is required. Public has to cooperate with the administration in this regard. Attempt will be made to restore water supply from May 7."

Mangaluru city to receive water till May 7

The water supply that was stopped in the city for two days due to water rationing, resumed on the morning of Friday, May 3. Excepting certain high zone areas, water was supplied to almost all parts of the city till the evening of Saturday, May 4.

As the water level in the Thumbay vented dam is depleting day by day, the water rationing system, which was abolished earlier, was re-instated. The MCC has already published the list of date and timings of water supply in the city till May 21. The present 96-hour period that has started on the morning of May 3, will continue till May 7 at 6 am. Then there will be no water supply for the next 48 hours.

Though the water supply was started after a gap of 48 hours on the morning of Friday, May 3, nearly half of the areas of the city did not receive the pumped water till late night of Friday. The situation was better on Saturday May 4. The areas, which have not received water till the evening of Saturday, are being supplied with water through tanker.

The level of water in Thumbay dam that was 4.59 meters on the evening of Friday, May 3, reduced to 4.54 meter on 6 am, Saturday, May 4.

Desalination is the answer as this will be safe, secondly, it creates electricity as a by-product which is safe to the environment.

If the authorities want to then they need not wait till the resources run dry. But if they act in time who will need them and how can they fill their coffers? That's why all this natak. Na kaoonga ya kaane doonga is just an empty slogan to mesmerise people. Any work what people require is done only at a price and not with any conscience.
Earlier wells were dug in the rivers to increase the groundwater but this was an age old system. Now no one bothers except until it hurts.
It's time the corporation wakes up and does the needful so that the people are not inconvenienced by the lackadaisical attitude of the authorities.

It's a miracle that Udupi and Dakshina Kannada , two regions that usually receive above-average rainfall every year, struggles from water shortage! In a way, it's our own karma that has caused this.

We had quite a few wells in our neighbourhood. All these wells had water almost to the surface even during summer. None of these people needed pipe water.
Then came the builders. These buildings need deep foundation and they destroyed all water sources. I still remember when they were building the foundation of some of these buildings, they had so much trouble because the water just wouldn't stop coming from underground!

Now, the wells don't have usable water beyond rainy season. Everyone is dependent on pipe water. Do the builders come to our help?

People representatives and authorities should treat this as a serious issue and work out a solution on a war front basis.

Water is a necessity and you have to put all your resources and time to solve this.

Day is not far when people will revolt against you if you do not solve this problem.

There is around four feet of silt accumulation in the Swarna River. The work of removing this also is not done. Why our local MLAs and MPs are sleeping?? Are they only custodians of agenda by which they always won???? Incompetent??? Not expected to take initiative towards solving water crisis?? Excavate all the lakes and rivers since it is right time as they are dry....so that they will hold more water next year!!
Why people are discounting MP that is hardly seen in constituency and still supporting for second terms??? What is MPs MLAs role in past years ???

As Mangalurus, we have to demand that the height of all residential buildings do not exceed 6 floors. Also max no. of apartments in a building should not exceed 50. I know it sounds excessive, but that is the only way the city can be saved with regards to the water problem. Huge buildings are coming up, taking up excessive resources with no second thought for the poor people who struggle to get a permanent water connection. This must stop. There is no planning by the corporation staff who are absolutely clueless. By restricting the size of the buildings the same available resources will be spread out evenly.

to solve drinking water problem in mangalore/udupi concerned Authority must
look into have seawater desalination plant at Mangalore same like in Gulf Countries have. This desalination sea water must be
supplied to buildings (construction sites) and manufacturing units at mangalore through separate pipe line. this water can be
used for toilet, washing utensils, washing cloths, shower etc. well water, borewell water and dam water only
to be allowed to use for drinking.

There are many cities located in the west coast of India from Gujrat to Kerala and some of them are larger than Mangalore, so we need to look after how these cities manage their water requirement as I don't think all them have got
seawater desalination plants. As a piece of solution- awareness should be created among the public on water conservation and the concerned authorities should give more importance on rain water harvesting ,building dams etc as we get sufficient amount of monsoon every year and we have plenty of water resources like rivers /lakes in our vicinity. As I mentioned previously -we should get inspired from Israel which turned their dry land into fertile by using modern water technologies
