New Delhi, May 21: Actor, Vivek Oberoi, on receiving feedback that the tweet accompanied by memes featuring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was found to be offensive by a large number of people, deleted it and apologized for the mistake. The tweet related to exit polls.
In his response to anger and derision expressed by people including celebrities, Oberoi said that he believes that if any woman is offended by his reply to the meme, it calls for remedial action. He deleted the tweet on Tuesday May 21. He also commented that on occasions, something that appears funny and harmless for some might not appear so for others. He reminded that he has been involved with empowerment of over 2,000 girls since the last ten years and that he can never think of treating any woman with disrespect.
Vivek Oberoi had come in for severe criticism for sharing the memes. National Commission for Women and Maharashtra State Commission for Women had also served notices on him. The memes featured photos of Aishwarya Rai with Salman Khan, Vivek Oberoi and also with her husband, Abhishek Bachchan and daughter, Aaradhya. The three memes bore headings, opinion polls, exit polls and results. His post was captioned, 'Haha! Creative! No politics here...just life'.

Initially when criticisms came in, Vivek on Monday evening had stressed that there is nothing to apologise for. He also wanted to know what wrong he had done and offered to tender an apology if the concerned showed him where he had gone wrong. He said that he had just laughed at the meme but expressed concern at the people making an issue out of it. He also said that those in the memes do not have any problem whereas everyone else had.
Actor, Sonam Kapoor and badminton player, Jwala Gutta, were among those who were severe in condemning the actor for sharing these memes.
