Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (MS/KR)

Udupi, May 29: In an exemplary act of philanthropy, the family members of a brain-dead accident victim donated his organs and gave new life to eight people.

Sudeep Poojary was seriously injured in the road accident that occurred at 1 pm on May 27 near Brahmavar. He was admitted to the KMC hospital in Manipal for treatment. However, at 9.15 pm on May 28, the team of doctors declared Sudeep as brain dead patient as per the protocol and functionality of Human Organ Act of 1994.

Sandeep Poojary and Pradeep Poojary, elder brothers of Sudeep Poojary expressed their willingness to donate the organ of brain-dead Sudeep. Accordingly two cornea, two kidneys, liver, pancreas, heart and lungs were removed, which helped to give life to eight people.

According to the Jeevasarthakathe (former ZCCK) protocol and decision two corneas (eyes) and two kidneys were transferred to patients in KMC Manipal itself. Liver and pancreas were sent to BGS Hospital in Bengaluru and heart valves and lungs were sent to BGS Hospital in Chennai.

Sandeep Poojary and Pradeep Poojary, brothers of the deceased Sudeep, said, "Organ donation is a noble deed. By donating his organs, our brother has done a great act even in his death."

Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent said, "Organ donation is an extremely good and noble deed, which saves the lives of many people. It has got high importance in life. People have to encourage these kinds of noble deeds. The media has to convey this to the public and encourage more people to take up organ donation."

The harvested organs were sent to Bengaluru via green corridor to the airport in Mangaluru from Manipal on the morning of May 29 with the help of the Udupi police department.

Why is it that a rich person with a similar injury, symptoms and a similar health profile is less likely to be declared "brain dead" by doctors within a period of 36 hours as opposed to someone poor?

Death does not differentiate between rich and poor. There are many rich people who have died immediately after road traffic accident. Only that cases are fewer as rich people usually travel by four wheelers unlike in 2 wheelers where the injury is much more grievous.

Nor did I say it does. Kindly read what I wrote once again. It's not about what vehicle the person travels by. And isn't it kind of stereotypical to say that only the rich have the privilege of owning a car or that they can't travel by a two wheeler? I'm talking about how these medical professionals treat people differently. When you have money you're treated better as opposed to a person who doesn't have a lot. And I'm not saying that all doctors are like this, but there are a handful of people.

Most doctors are very ethical and put in all their efforts to save a person regardless of their status and I respect them for that., but there are a couple "doctors" who stop caring and taking advantage of the situation, such as claiming a person brain dead to obtain their organs. Also, I'm not saying that this is what happened in this case. But it has happened before to others. And I'm not against organ donation, if the person is willing to, that's great. I'm not trying to offend anyone, if I have, I apologize. Just my personal opinion along with a couple facts.
