Udupi: Water of River Swarna will suffice for only five days

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Jun 6: As per an assessment made on Wednesday June 5, the water currently found in some pits of River Swarna would be sufficient to meet water requirements of the city here for five more days.

Currently water found from the pits dotting the riverbed is being pumped to Baje dam from where it is supplied to the city. Six pumps installed at Puthige bridge, pit of Puthige Math, Saibragundi etc is first pumped to the dam. On Sunday last, a huge boulder that was blocking the flow of water was removed, allowing the water to flow freely.

The administration is thinking of pumping of water from a pit in Swarna River at Bhandaribettu area and to organize voluntary participation of the general public to remove obstacles in the flow of river water, if rain continues to remain elusive even after five days. Bhandaribettu pit is expected to provide water for five days.

MLA Raghupati Bhat visited the pumping area on Wednesday too and observed the development. He also felt that the water currently available might be sufficient for five days. Accompanied by municipal councillor, Manjunath Manipal and others, he guided the pumping operations.

Yes, rain water harvest is the best solution.
Here are some methods of creating watersheds to retain rain water in the ground.

Those of us with land can create our own watershed. It can be as simple as planting banana plants or fruit trees in 2-3 feet deep ditches, dug across rain water run-offs on our land.

just cannot believe this is river suvarna ......................have seen it overflowing and flooding
there are hundreds of ponds -almost one or 2 ponds in front of every house on both sides of the rivers.
remove silt and stop depending on govt water supply.....

Arise before it is too late.... Do rain water harvesting in the max places that you could.... Tiny drops of water can only make a Large Ocean.. and dont keep on depending on the Government.... Undivided South Canara is the best example for that . Therefore do know and never regret later.

Let us learn from this experience and plan for the future. Let us also pray that God give sufficient rain for his creatures at this critical time. Thank you and God bless each and every one of us.

We have brought this situation upon ourselves. None of us are ready to save water or harvest rain water during monsoon. Hope we learn at least now.
