Mangalore, May 12:
Gold ornaments worth around Rs 1.5 crore were stolen from a house, ‘Swagath,’ located near Telecom House in Pandeswar here. The theft came to light on Tuesday May 12.

The house belongs to Dr M R Shetty, secretary of   M V Shetty Memorial Trust, which runs professional colleges and a hospital in the city. The theft took place when the residents of the house were away at Bangalore.

Shetty said the thieves had taken away intricately carved gold ornaments studded with precious stones including diamonds. The thieves entered the house by removing one of the planks from the back door and sneaking in through the small opening. “Many of the gold ornaments stolen were invaluable, which were even used by our grandparents,” said Dr M R Shetty.

Dr Shetty suspected that the theft took place at around midnight of Monday May 11, when the family members were not at home. “We had been to Bangalore. After returning home today morning, we realized that we had been robbed,” he explained

He clarified that the exact details and worth of the ornaments can be assessed only after his wife, who has stayed back at Bangalore, returns to the city.

A security guard appointed to guard the house by Dr Shetty said, he did not hear any sound at midnight. “I was awoke till 12.30 am on Monday night,” he claimed.

N R Mukri, police inspector working in Pandewar police station here informed that the investigation is on. He said, they have collected basic information and also finger prints besides pressing the sniffer dogs into service.

It appears, some one well versed with the place and the security weaknesses, were involved with the robbery. On the other hand, they would have collected information that the residents would be out of town during this period. The way one of the planks of the door was removed stealthily, gives out an inkling that the thieves had studied everything beforehand. The sniffer dog employed by the policemen jumped over the compound wall and reached a building that is under construction, located about 100 metres away.

During the time Dr Shetty was in Bangalore with his wife on Sunday, his daughter and son-in-law had been to their house in Kadri in the city.

A persons intuition reaction is normal but how sad it effects a great man like Dr. M. Venugopal Shetty who has F.R.C.S degree in medicine and set his life for a noble cause of mankind is explorable. I had been in his hospital in my child hood, his sacred touch on the patient cured many orthopedic illness. He served poorest of poor .

In his old age many days he used to be in operation theater whole day. His great operation skill saved scores of people from amputation. His belongings is which have emotional value is passed from the generation to generation preserving in his house by his son Dr.Ram Gopal Shetty’s pioneer duty.

Mr. Stanley: It is surprising to know you are from Mangalore and still ignorant of many facts. First of all you dont know or bothered to find out about this doctor before you made these unwaranted comments. Everyone undergoes a bad patch in their lifetime. This you cant generalise to all. This is not a illegal asset but a d asset (family jewelery that was passed on over five generations).

DR M.V. SHETTY was great surgon who contributed a lot to combined D K and set up practice in Mangalore in 1948. His son DR M.R.Shetty also took over the practice in 1978 and started the trust in his fathers name and contributed a lot to the poor and needy by managing the blood bank at Govt Hosp at Mangalore for over a decade, he is also managing the free speech and hearing clinic for the physically challenged for the last 20 years.

There were times when operations were cancelled for lack of blood and blood is now available free to what they call now patients who are BPL and Dr Shetty spends his money to MAINTAIN THE BLOOD BANK. Your comments on such doctors is in poor taste and you are totaly ignorant of what is happening around you. There is still time to correct yourself. Umesh Mally

One can imagine if the stolen gold is 1.5 crore what is the amount of hidden gold and cash be with such doctors. These kind of doctors are swindling money from the public and they don''t know what is charity means and they won''t bother to wipe the tears of poor and the downtrodden when they reach a ladder of success. So atleast the remaining wealthy may start sharing their excess wealth to the upliftment for the needy

Very sad to know Dr. Shetty has been robbed. It is a lesson for everyone to keep their money and ornaments safely at safe deposit lockers at bank.

It is always better to have theft insurance when you keep valuable ornaments at home. Secondly inform the immediate neighbourhood and also the nearest police station so that they also keep a watch. Though the police dept. carries out therir duty by patrolling in the night, if we inform them in advance they keep a special eye in the area. BUT MOST OF ALL KEEPING SUCH VALUABLES AT HOME IS NOT SAFE, INSTEAD A BANK LOCKER IS THE ONLY ALTERNATIVE. I am a victim of such robbery when it took place some 10 years back. Running after the police dept. and court is just an additonal tension and waste of money. I never did that.

I am not surprised about the theft but shocked about Dr.M R Shetty''s negligence. Who advised doctor to keep 1.5 Crore worth Jewellery at home when locker facility is available in the bank ? I am very sorry to say that total negligence from doctor and his family helped thieves to escape with 1.5 Crore worth gold !! It is a lesson to every one.
