Mangalore, May 15: The Democratic Youth Front of India (DYFI) and Students’ Federation of India (SFI) burned an effigy of the government on Thursday May 14, protesting the commercialization and selling of education indiscriminately.
The protest was held in front of the deputy commissioner’s (DC) office and the protesters urged for the formation of a rule to help all students get seats in all colleges without the donation menace.
Muneer Katipalla, district president, DYFI, said, “The government, by allowing the private colleges to find their own way of selecting students, keeps students from economically weak backgrounds away from education. So, the government should make a policy of allowing 25 percent of students to be selected by the private institutions while others should be chosen through the government. It can allow the students from poor family backgrounds and meritorious students get the education of their dreams”, he said.
Prashanth Achar, district president of SFI, and Ramesh Kumar, secretary of DYFI, also spoke and demanded that the government make a pro-poor students rule.
The protesters held placards that said, “Education is a constitutional right” and “Commercialization of education is denying education to poor”.
