New Delhi, Jun 25: In a diplomatic stance, India urged The United States and Islamic Republic of Iran to diffuse the rising tension between them.
The ongoing stress laid on both the countries is the result of Iran’s attack on an American spy drone, RQ-4 Global Hawk. The attack took place after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) found the drone violating the Iranian airspace over the southern coastal province of Hormozgan. Nonetheless, US have titled the attack to be ‘unprovoked attack’ claiming that the drone was flying over international waters when it was attacked.
Considering the mounting tensions and the incident, several carriers both in India and abroad are refraining from flying over the Iranian airspace.
In the light of the incident, Iran has made it clear that they would defend their borders when and if they sense a threat. Meanwhile, the US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he aborted a military strike to retaliate for Iran's downing of the U.S. drone. Trump said that an attack by the United States could have killed 150 people, and signalled that he was open to talks with Tehran.
In response to Trump, foreign ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said
"Regardless of any decision U.S. officials make, we will not allow any of Iran's borders to be violated. Iran will firmly confront any aggression or threat by America."
The ties between the two countries went sour, when Tehran considered amassing more nuclear fuel. In response to the matter US said it would continue to ‘impose maximum pressure’ until Iran gives up ambitions of expanding its nuclear programme.
US have already applied economic sanctions on the supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In this regard, India is considering to engage with the US on alternatives for oil imports in view of its sanctions on Iran.
