Chandigarh, Jun 28: The city of Chandigarh has been often considered as a ‘smart city’ by the city’s administration department. In sector 44, on Wednesday, a fault in the transformer caused a power failure. The restoration time taken was over 17 hours, after which there was constant power fluctuations.

Following the restoration of the transformer, an air conditioner blew up on Thursday. Fortunately, it was reported there were no casualties. Further inquiry on the matter, revealed that the fault in the transformer was due to use of obsolete machinery and old wiring and the fact that the power department dealt with the situation in the most reckless manner caused them to face the wrath of the residents.

The power department was not in any state to answer the complaints of the people. The superintending engineer, Ranjit Singh disconnected calls when he was probed. Similarly, excecutive engineer, Deepak Bansal also refused to comment when asked about when the old wiring will be replaced.

Baljinder Singh, chairman of the Federation of Sectors Welfare Association of Chandigarh, said, “Have the senior officers ever checked the working of the power department? Have they ever seen the infrastructure they have and how they deal with power-related complaints? Only because these officers get uninterrupted power supply they do not even think of how difficult it is to bear the heat.”
