Four Indian women detained illegally by employer in Dubai rescued by Consulate

New Delhi, Jun 29: Members of the Consulate General of India (CGI) rescued four Indian women from Tamil Nadu, who were duped and detained illegally by employer in Dubai. India's Minister of State for External Affairs, V Muraleedharan on Friday, in a tweet has confirmed that the women are safe.

In the tweet, Muraleedharan said that the rescue operation was carried out by the Consulate General of India (CGI) in Dubai with the help of local authorities.

"Acting on an alert, with the help of local authorities CGI Dubai has rescued four young Indian female workers belonging to Tamil Nadu today. They were duped and detained illegally by their employer in Dubai," he added.

It is reported that the four women from Coimbatore and Tamil Nadu went to Dubai to find jobs as hostesses in an 'event management' company; however, the employer forced them to work in a dance bar. The women informed their family, who then contacted the Ministry of External Affairs.

In a follow up tweet Muraleedharan added, "Our Consulate in Dubai @cgidubai is arranging their repatriation back to India quickly. @narendramodi government never compromises on the welfare of Indian workers abroad,"

As per Khaleej Times, Consul General of India to Dubai Vipul said, "With the help of local authorities, we were able to secure the release of the four girls very quickly. The women are expected to fly back today. The women were in Dubai for a short time, maybe four to five days.”

Vipul explained that the women came without checking the legal formalities and they did not have a contract or employment terms. “In this case, the girls were not illiterate, yet they made the mistake of coming here on a visit visa," he added.

While insisting that Indians should not come to Dubai on visit visas in the hope of converting it into permanent employment status, Vipul said "Workers must come here on employment visas, and get full clarification about their employment and employment terms."

My hats off to Consulate General of India in Dubai and the local authorities for rescuing these four Indian women from the clutches of the employer. This is a lesson for others both men and women that before leaving the country for a job should verify with the immigration authorities of the status of their visa and other travel documents.
