Mangaluru, Jul 23: The rain, which has been experienced in Dakshina Kannada district since the last some days, continued on Monday June 22. Several low-lying areas were inundated and some houses were damaged due to landslides. A huge tree near Kankanady junction fell down, injuring a two-wheeler rider and a girl student in the bargain. 

Artificial floods heaped problems on the people in certain places. A house at Kunjathbail in the city partially collapsed, but further damage was averted as family members took prompt action. House of Abbas and Razaque faced grave danger after a hillock at Amblamogaru suffered landslide. Further landslides are expected in this area. 

As the main drain at Falnir overflowed, dirty water entered some houses. An apartment complex in the region was also covered all around by water. As slush came into the houses with water, families had a hard time cleaning up houses. 

Drainage works and footpaths are under construction in different parts of the city. As these works have been abandoned in the middle, they are creating problems for the traffic and smooth flow of water. The problem was grave in places like Ambedkar Circle, Mallikatte etc where proper drains are not available. 

As the meteorological department has predicted heavy rains to continue till July 27, the district administration has issued red alert. Fishermen and tourists have been asked to stay away from the sea. 

During the 24-hour period ended Monday morning, the district received 66.8 mm rainfall. Bantwal got 66.5 mm rain, Beltangady 65.2, Mangaluru 76.4, Sullia 51 cm and Puttur 75 mm.
