Security to be beefed up at TN's Athi Varadar festival

Chennai, Jul 29 (IANS): The Tamil Nadu government has decided to deploy more security personnel to manage the rush of devotees at the Devarajaswami temple in the state's Kancheepuram following more complaints of suffocation following the July 18 deaths, an official said on Sunday.

On Sunday, about 30 persons suffered giddiness while standing in the queue and were given medical assistance.

Large number of devotees throng the temple to pray to Athi Varadar, who gives 'darshan' to people once in 40 years. The 12-foot idol of Athi Varadar (made of fig tree wood), lying in a silver casket underwater in the temple tank for the past 40 years, was taken out on June 28.

Devotees were allowed to have 'darshan' of the deity for 48 days from July 1 to August 17 at the Devarajaswami temple, popularly known as Varadaraja Perumal Temple.

Since July 1, about 38.5 lakh people from different parts of the country had 'darshan' of Athi Varadar.

On July 18, four persons standing in the queue fainted due to suffocation and later died in the hospital.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K.Palaniswami then said the administration did not expect huge turnout of devotees at the temple.

The last time the Athi Varadar was raised out of the water was on July 2, 1979. Normally a person can have 'darshan' of Athi Varadar once or twice in a lifetime.
