Mangaluru, Aug 27: Due to heavy downpour in the city which lasted for about four hours on Monday August 26 afternoon, artificial floods were witnessed in various parts of the city. Over 25 houses, shops and buildings were covered by knee-deep water. As water flooded the roads, vehicle riders and pedestrians had to wade through water to their destinations.

Kottara Chowki, Kodialbail, Bhagwathi Nagar, Kudroli, Bejai, Anegundi, Alake, area near Sharavu temple, city centre mall, Jyothi, Derebail Konchadi and Boloor were some of the places from where artificial floods were reported. Families living in Bhagawathi Nagar had a hard time as water rushed into low-lying areas from flooded drains.

The meteorological department had issued orange alert in the city on Monday. The sunny weather in the morning gave way to heavy rain by 11.30 am. The rain continued till 3 pm, and water which gushed into drains flooded them, and the flood water rushed to low-lying areas. As water level rose, even two-wheelers parked at various spots faced problems.

Realizing that there would be heavy rains, several schools in the city announced holiday in the afternoon. As standing water blocked their way, many small children and high school students faced lot of problems in reaching home. Many were seen walking through waist-deep water.

What has happened to the smart City plans only fooling people. There are no proper drains, there is more water on road than the drains. When there is a good shower. What are engineers at MCC doing only taking salary? The citizens of Mangalore are paying the muncipal tax and this is what we get.
