Bantwal, Jul 7: Flood waters from the tributaries of the Netravati river have inundated the power house of A M R Power Project at Shamboor village, near here, on Monday July 6.
The river has been overflowing due to the incessant rains and heavy winds that have been lashing the district for the past week. The gushing waters at the power house damaged the electrical motors and electrical installations. Although A M R Power Project had plans to commission this power plant in August, now it will be delayed further.
The machinery and heavy duty electrical installations worth several lacs of rupees were extensively damaged due to floods at the location. Divers from Mangalore, Belgaum, and Shimoga were pressed into service by A M R officers, to save the expensive installations from further damage.
Accordingly, the heavy motor pumps were installed near the power house to drain the water from the location and help in swift recovery. The officers of A M R are camping at the site to oversee the operation.
Local Opposition to A M R Power Project:
The locals have been opposing the setting up of the power project on their farm lands, right from the beginning. They also expressed concern over the flooding at the power house and cited substandard construction by the contractor to be the reason.
They were not allowed to visit the power house for the next four days as per the orders of officers of A M R Power Project. Meanwhile, officer Rajesh Naidu informed the media persons that the project will be commissioned as scheduled in August without a hitch.
