Mangaluru, Sep 11: Sand extraction in Coastal Regulatory Zone of the district has resumed after the customary rainy season holiday. However, the current season for sand extraction will last for only three months. 

As compared to previous year, the sand extraction this time did not encounter any hiccups but for the normal rainy season holiday. The district therefore did not face too much shortage of sand unlike the previous year. As there was delay in beginning sand extraction last year, there was sand shortage in the district. 

Sand extraction will come to an end by December end this year and the extraction can begin only after a fresh bathymetric survey is conducted. This process may take about two months to complete.

The last year's bathymetric survey was conducted by Geo Marine Solutions and its report was sent to NITK by the district administration for technical report. NITK had, in its October 11 report, said that sand can be extracted in 22 blocks in CRZ areas in Rivers Phalguni and Netravati. 105 persons were allowed to extract sand in CRZ area. Sand extraction had begun on full scale only during January this year. 

Deputy director of mines and geology, Padmashree, said that preparations are afoot to get bathymetric survey done to facilitate sand extraction in the region during the next season, and also to complete other mandatory processes.
