Mangalore, Jul 16: In an effort to instill confidence among the public about their preparedness to deal with situations arising from floods and heavy rains, the district administration arranged a mock drill led by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Thursday July 16.
The drill was held at a low-lying spot surrounded by river water at Kallapu near Thokkottu. The mock drill primarily focused on rescue operations. The operation was held with the help of the CISF, fire department, home guards, and the police.
The NDRF team had arrived from Chennai and was led by NDRF commandant R H Ranmung.
The operation started with three people pretending as if they were drowning in the Netravathi river. The team of rescue guards went on boats announcing that they were on a rescue operation and there was no need to worry. Later, the guards rescued the drowning person and provided him first aid treatment after bringing him on to the river bank.
The same operation was demonstrated on two more people while another managed to reach shore with an empty but closed plastic can on his back, holding the rope fixed by the team. The officials said that this was to show the public that they can swim using such materials with the help of the rope thrown by the rescue team.
S A Prabhakar Sharma, in-charge deputy commissioner, describing the mock drill said this is to create awareness among the public that in any condition they need not fear as such teams are ready to spring into action.
He added that the team will be in the district for two more days and if the rain continues, their stay would be extended.
Besides the fire department, home guards, and senior officials from the district administration were also present at the mock drill.
