Mangalore, Jul 17:  All the 18 crew members of ‘M V Asian Forest’, the ship in distress, are safe with the assistance of ‘Sankalp’, the coast guard ship, on Friday July 17.

The captain and five crew members arrived at the coast guard office near New Mangalore Port while the others have been hospitalized.

The ship, carrying 14,500 metric tons of iron ore, had tilted 50 degrees portside, when it was about six nautical miles away from the port.

“It started sailing in the morning at 10 am from Mangalore port and was headed for Zhavgjiagang in China”, informed Padam Shankar Jha, the district commandant of the coast guard.

All 18 crew members including the captain are from China.

The deputy inspector general and the commanding officer of the coast guard, Kuldip Singh Sheroan, said, “The coast guard’s intention was to rescue the crew and we have been successful. Five members of the crew and Captain Yin Sheng Yan are with coast guard officials”.

Captain Yin Sheng Yan said that bad weather caused this accident. The other four members are Zhang Dong, Chen Hai Tao, Lin Ze Min, and Xu Ning.

But the other thirteen, who reached the Ullal shore with the help of lifeboats, are in a hospital at Deralakatte.

The coast guard officers said that the ship is in a dangerous condition. They said that when the initial information was received at 11.00 am in the morning, it was only tilted about 20 degrees. The crews also confirmed that it is tilting more.

Sheroan, briefing about the operation, said that the sea was rough during the time of the rescue operation. He added that the five people rescued were moved to the coast guard ship with the help of a life raft.

He also said that the same coast guard ship ‘Sankalp’ had apprehended ‘F V Kuber’ following the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai.

Mangalore, Jul 17:
A ship which departed from the New Mangalore Port, sent out a distress signal after it tilted in the Arabian Sea due to a technical snag on Friday July 17.

Initial information received from sources in New Mangalore Port indicates that the ship in difficulty is the ‘Asian Forest’ which had left the port on Friday morning. The ship has a cargo of iron ore, and is headed to China. It is reportedly tilted at an angle of 20 degrees.

A team of 150 from the coast guard has gone to the rescue of the vessel in distress which has a crew of 18.

The coast guard sources said that the ship had been repaired once and travelled nearly one nautical mile before developing the same problem again. At first, it was repaired using equipment inside the ship.

However, the port officials have not provided specific details about the incident.

Why are such ships allowed to sail out of the harbour if they are unable to navigate smoothly on the rough seas in tough weather conditions? I am not sure whether something is wrong with the Arabian Sea in these parts or with the Port authorities. I agree with the observations made by Mr. Arun Kumar, Dubai. These ship wrecks and their cargo are bound to further pollute our already polluted marine environment.
