Udupi, Jul 21: The greatest solar eclipse of the 21st century will occur in the early morning on Wednesday July 22. The sun will be eclipsed before the sunrise and for this part of the country, it will be a partial eclipse. However, total solar eclipse will be visible from Varanasi, Kolkata, Haridwar, Patna, Gaya and some other regions in north India.
The sunrise in this part of the coast on Wednesday will be at 6.14 am and the sun will get eclipsed at 5.30 am. The eclipse is set to end at 7.16 am. The eclipsed portion of the sun will be visible in a silhouetted form (like a bangle). 6.20 am will be the time when the eclipse will be at its peak.
In Bangalore, the eclipsed sun will rise at 6.03 am and the eclipse will end at 7.17 am. In Mumbai, the sun will rise at 6.12 am. The eclipse will begin there at 5.28 am and will end at 7.19 am.
Arrangements have been made at the terrace of Poornaprajna Institute of Management by Udupi Poornaprajna Amateur Astronomers Association. About 50 eyeglasses to be worn at the time of viewing the sun have been arranged, said A P Bhat, convener of the Association.
The eclipse, which will not be visible in this form for the next 50 years, should never be viewed either with naked eyes or as a reflection in plain or coloured water. People can however, watch the eclipse in water mixed with cow dung or as reflected from a wall, Dr Bhat said.
Wednesday happens to be Ati Amavasya. Udyavar SDM Ayurveda College medical superintendent Dr Y N Shetty has opined that those who want to consume the 'Ati Maddu', a concoction made by extracting the juice from the bark of a tree in water as per custom and mixing it with pepper powder, may do so after taking bath subsequent to the conclusion of the eclipse. At Sri Krishna Mutt too, the juice made as above, will be distributed after the eclipse ends.
