Bengaluru: State govt contemplating on introducing NRC - Basavaraj Bommai

Bengaluru, Oct 3: The Karnataka government is contemplating on introducing National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state. Home minister Basavaraj Bommai on Thursday told media that currently the state government is collecting information and has asked senior officials to study and understand the law.

“I have been informed that people across borders prefer to settle in Bengaluru and other important cities of the state. There are cases reported that some of them have indulged in criminal activities and some are already arrested. The Karnataka government will take a decision on implementing NRC after discussions with union home minister,” Bommai said.

Bommai had told reporters in Haveri on Wednesday that rolling out NRC was discussed in two meetings.

Union home minister Amit Shah on Tuesday reiterated that the NRC will be rolled out across the country and all illegal immigrants will be thrown out through legal means. He had stressed that NRC is ‘a must’ in view of national security. However, he assured that Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist refugees will be accorded Indian citizenship in advance, with the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

Assam is the only state in the country where NRC exercise was introduced. Names of over 19 lac people were omitted from the final list which was published on August 31. Among the people whose names were deleted, 12 lac people were Hindus.

BJP couldn't do anything about the economy or the rising prices and deteriorating situation in the country. They are running after such issues to keep the people distracted.

A smear campaign on Muslims. I think India needs a different NRC(National Register of Criminals) given the criminals ruling this country.

Yes yes we want this in Mangalore. In the past 15 years Mangalore population had increased so much we don't know who is who.

There are lot of migrants who have come from outside state & have made local documents. There are many foreign returnees also.

So if you implement this we will provide the names so that half the Mangalore population can be deported to outside

Amit Shah’s NRC Plan is the Communal Division, and a big lie too.

The fact is that all this talk of refugees and immigrants is classic dog-whistle politics, and is an integral part of the Modi government’s overarching strategy of dividing the Indian people on the basis of religion.

That is why leaders like Amit Shah are trying to scare Muslim citizens and make them feel insecure about their place in their own country while telling Hindus that this country really belongs to them and reassuring them that they will never have to fear their citizenship or devotion to the country being questioned.

The reason Narendra Modi and Amit Shah have no place for them is because they love power more than they love refugees, even Hindu ones. They know that if they were to scrap the cut-off date – which already violates the 1971 cut-off date stipulated in the Assam Accord – voters in Assam will surely throw the BJP out of power there.

So how do you “appease” Assamese sentiment while also appealing to Hindu sentiments in the rest of India? Modi and Shah calculated that the 2014 cut-off date would help them strike a balance between appealing to Assamese sentiment – which is fiercely against giving Indian citizenship to any Bangladeshi, even Hindu ones – and using the citizenship and NRC process to polarise the whole country and consolidate their Hindu vote bank.
