Beltangady, Aug 4: District superintendent of police Dr A Subrahmanyeshwar Rao has claimed that his department has succeeded in solving the case relating to the death of Fr James Mukalel (39), at Kundady in Totattady village near here  on Thursday July 30 morning. At the same time, he has refused to divulge details, preferring to wait till the post mortem report in this case is received by the department.  Circle inspector Gangi Reddy said that the investigation, which is in progress, would be concluded in a couple of days.

It is learnt, two women from Shakti house were interrogated by the women’s police station, one of whom is stated to be from Totattady Kundady. Information about the other woman is as yet not made known, although she is stated to be from Kerala. Both of them are nursing students from Mangalore. It is claimed, that several calls were made by the priest to the landline of a house near the spot from where the priest's body was found and also a girl from that house. A team of doctors that conducted post mortem visited Totattady Kundady on Monday. It is yet to be ascertained as to whether their visit has helped the investigations. Several locals were questioned by the policemen.

Puttur assistant commissioner of police Dr Chandragupta had visited Tottady Kundady on Sunday. The three-day decennial celebrations of the local diocese, scheduled to be held from Monday August 3, have been indefinitely postponed in view of the tragic death of the priest.

When do the public get to know the truth? do we ever get to know? I dont think the real post mortem report will ever see the light of the day. Finally one life is lost, their family suffers whatever the reasons to be. Public once again mute spectators for a barbaric murder.

I honestly dont like people appreciating police officers for doing their job. I would rather appreciate the media and the government for pushing them so hard to investigate such serious cases. Police officers are paid for their commitment and work in resolving the problems. Our concern should be whether they send the right person behind bars or not.

The very credibility of ''the police force'' all over India is under cloud. We have to redeem the police first! Who will do that? The police are also under presseure! They are helpless! They are under the prssure of Local Governments, under the pressure of local leaders, MLAs, MPs, ganglords and others. How shall we make our police force free and fair and credible?

A proper investigation will eliminate further catholic priests being targetted. The religious in the interior places should not travel alone but have a companion.

Hope the investigation doesn''t end saying it was a natural death. It''s quite mysterious and can''t rule out any high profile foul play.

I think those who were comparing this case with Gujrat and Orissa will not open their mouth once the investigation is over.
