Mangalore, Aug 6: With fishing set to begin again after the annual ban, members of the fishermen community performed ‘Samudra Pooja’ as per the custom on the shores of the Arabian Sea at Tannirbavi on Wednesday August 5.
The worship was performed in the presence of Sri Raja Sandyanath Swami and his disciples from Kadri Math and leaders of the fishermen community.
Vasudeva Bolor, a community leader, said that it is a custom that fishermen perform ‘pooja’ before commencing fishing. “The ‘pooja’ is offered to the Sea God to help us get a better yield when fishing and to keep us safe at sea”, he added.
Fishermen from seven localities including Bolar, Jeppu, and Mogaveerapatna, were present at the event.
The ban was implemented by the district administration as per the orders of the state government to allow the fish to breed. The ban came into effect on June 15.
During the period of the ban, mechanized boats having engines with more than 10 hp were not allowed to fish.
The fishermen started fishing today in the hope of a bountiful yield. At Bunder, fishermen were found preparing their boats by loading ice on board to store the fish.
