Mangalore, Aug 6: With fishing set to begin again after the annual ban, members of the fishermen community performed ‘Samudra Pooja’ as per the custom on the shores of the Arabian Sea at Tannirbavi on Wednesday August 5.

The worship was performed in the presence of Sri Raja Sandyanath Swami and his disciples from Kadri Math and leaders of the fishermen community.

Vasudeva Bolor, a community leader, said that it is a custom that fishermen perform ‘pooja’ before commencing fishing. “The ‘pooja’ is offered to the Sea God to help us get a better yield when fishing and to keep us safe at sea”, he added.

Fishermen from seven localities including Bolar, Jeppu, and Mogaveerapatna, were present at the event.

The ban was implemented by the district administration as per the orders of the state government to allow the fish to breed. The ban came into effect on June 15.

During the period of the ban, mechanized boats having engines with more than 10 hp were not allowed to fish.

The fishermen started fishing today in the hope of a bountiful yield. At Bunder, fishermen were found preparing their boats by loading ice on board to store the fish.

What a beautiful lesson to learn from the Fishermen of Mangalore about their rituals and prayers before they ventured into deeop waters for the new season. Customs, traditions and rituals are valuable ingredients that strengthen our professions. Whether we are Fishermen or Farmers or even Barbers, we all possess a "dignity of labour" for who we are and where we belong. Our daily bread is a blessing that brings multitude of pride and honour for ourselves and our generations. May the "Samudhra pooja" bring continued luck, safety and prosperity to all our Fishermen so that they enjoy a good catch each time and bring lot of progress of prosperity for themselves and their community.

WHAT a tradition !!! GREAT Thanking & praying to the Provider. We mangaloreans are such avid fish lovers but not many are aware of the hard working fisher folks!! So the break is over & we can await our quota of fresh fish. The fishermen are a great, straight forward community.

Very daring & very brave are our sea faring brethren!!moga- VEERS, so called because they are veeras, the brave. So let us also be brave to bargain for good rates haaaa!!!. Bargaining for fish ,in itself is half the fun. LONG LIVE THE FISHING COMMUNITY.... JAI HO !!. jerardin dsouza
