Mangaluru, Oct 24: Little Sisters of the Poor at Maroli, Mangaluru, in association with their benefactors and well-wishers are organizing a day-long mini carnival, ‘Festival of Charity’, with entertainment and fun-filled games on November 10 at Maroli.

The carnival is organized for a noble cause and it contains food galore, which includes homemade delicacies, take away food, assorted pastries and savouries, ice creams, exciting games, request songs, gift hampers and handicrafts items. The music will be an additional entertainment. The entry will be free.

The Little Sisters of the Poor are taking care of around 70 inmates of both sexes, aged above 65 years and belonging to all religions and provide them with basic amenities without any charge for the rest of their lives. The institution aims to provide them holistic health care, which includes physical, mental, moral and spiritual, and thus assist them to spend their time with dignity, peace and joy in the twilight period of their life.

Two nuns of this institution visit the surrounding areas of Mangaluru daily and collect funds in cash and kind to meet the minimum requirements of their residents. It is solely by the public charity and generosity that enable these nuns to meet the daily needs of this facility.

I know these Sisters who were having their original old-age home along the highway between Nanthoor Junction and Pumpwell Circle. And I have written about this wonderful institution and one resident, Cecilia, who lived beyond a century.
Now they have shifted to Maroli. Their Sisters visit homes in Mangaluru to collect funds and I remember responding with small cash donations. But, I also know that there are many other ways of helping the resource-starved nuns. I know of an IT pioneer magnate of Mangaluru who supplies on a monthly basis provisions needed to feed the inmates.
Many others sponsor breakfasts or meals to mark happy occasions in their homes – like birthdays, weddings and wedding anniversaries by underwriting the modest cost. I think this an opportunity for socially conscious citizens to get involved.
I wish success for their projected program.
