Udupi, Oct 26: Sirigandannada Sangha (Kannada Club) of Milagres English Medium School Kallianpur, as a mark of tribute to stalwart of Kannada literature, Dr Kota Shivaram Karanth, organized Kannada Dinacharane on October 23 and 24.
Dr K Shivaram Karanth is a well known person of Kannada being a novelist, playwrighter and an ecological conservationist. He was also called ‘Walking encyclopedia.’ Well known Kannada historian, Ramachandra Guha called him ‘Rabindranath Tagore of Modern India’.
He is considered one of the most influential novelists in Kannada. He has 41 novels, 6 short stories, 12 children’s books, 2 plays, few travelogues and biographies and autobiographies to his credit. Three of his novels have been made into movies. His novels include Marali Mannige, Bettada Jeeva, Alida Mele, Mookajjiya Kanasugalu, Mai Managala Suliyalli, Ade OOru Ade Mara, Shaneeshwarana Neralinalli, Kudiyara Koosu, Svapnada Hole, Sarsammana Samadhi and Chomana Dudi are widely read and have received significant commendation.
To commemorate, respect the state language and to honour a great stalwart along with the purpose of inspiring students, a special assembly was planned and executed by members of Kannada Club of Primary and High school on October 23 and 24 separately.
Poornima and Anusha were the chief guests. Competitions namely Patriotic group song, Elocution, Poetry, Kannada Dictation, Naada Geete, Essay on Dr Karanth’s Contribution etc were organized for students and winners were awarded prizes. A special book exhibition of Kannada books was displayed for the students.
Addressing the gathering, Fr Lancy SJ spoke of the need to love the state language. Only when one likes the language, one can develop the taste for it and learn it well. Everyone must have the pride of knowing well the language of the state. The chief guest spoke on the contribution of several Kannada writers and poets who have enriched the Kannada language and literature.
The winners were awarded attractive prizes and certificates. Besides this, the students put up a cultural programme.
Neha of class VII spoke on the contribution of Dr Shivaram Karanth. Shamya of class VI compered the programme, Sakshi of class V welcomed the gathering and Amog of class VII rendered the vote of thanks.
