Udupi, Aug 13: A cyclist died on the spot  when an express bus rammed his bicycle  near the Halima Sabju Auditorium, Udyavar, on National Highway (NH) 17, here on Thursday August 13, 2009.

The deceased has been identified as fortyeight year old Jagdish Acharya, a daily wage earner and a resident of nearby Shankarapura.  The speeding bus ran over Jagdish after it hit his bicycle.

The local people  and passersby gathered at the horrific scene . A verbal abuse followed soon with the bus driver who was trying to flee the spot. A mob gathered and sought immediate relief to the family of deceased . They also demanded the arrest  of the erring bus driver.

Kaup  police has registered a case in this regard.

The body of the cyclist  was lying on NH 17  here for  half an hour, after he was run over and killed by  a speeding Vegadoot express bus.  The locals irked by the inefficiency of the police , laid road blockades, to protest against apathy of the police department.  As a result,  traffic on either side of the highway was at standstill for over 2 hours creating a 5 kilometer traffic line up on both sides.

Kaup police inspector  Cheluvaraj who arrived at the spot , ordered the people to move away which they resisted.  He also  threatened the mob that he would register a case on them, if they did not  move away from the accident spot.   The mob finally dispersed when the  RTO arrived and assured them that the reckless driver would be arrested  and monetary compensation would be awarded to the family of the deceased.

With the backdrop of rising mishaps on NH 17 by reckless bus drivers, the locals and the general public have urged the transport Authority to take stringent action on reckless express bus drivers who are the main cause of  several accidents that have taken away  lives of innocent victims besides causing injury and property damage.

This is one big problem that our RTOs or the police can''t control. Our bus drivers are really so rash that every time we travel we have to have are hearts in our mouth. Its just because all these RTOs/Police officials are in the pockets of those who run these buses. Its obvious that these people get a lot of bribe from the operaters to keep their mouth and eyes shut. Its somebody elses father ,brother or son who is dead.who cares? Will they control the speed limit to get things right, never.

Will they get the culprit to justice, may be as an eyewash to agitated public. And story goes on and on.......RTOS get in some strict rules and see that its followed. For sometime please forget THE BRIBES you get to feed your family and do your jobs.Introduce some strict rules and force them to follow.

VERY SAD, MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE ALSO WE ALL PRAY FOR THE POOR FAMILY, I DONT THINK RTO WILL HONOUR THEIR PROMISE OF GIVING COMPHENSATION TO POOR FAMILY WHICH THEY MADE IN FRONT OF THE PUBLIC JUST TO EVADE FROM THEM, OFCOUSE POOR FAMILY WILL SUFFER RUNNING AFTER MANY DEPARTMENTS.

Let the RTO officials travel incognito in the express buses regularly and experience the attitude of the bus drivers and conductors - in particular, their use of harsh horns instead of brakes, bulldozing small vehicles, etc. Cyclists are mere nuisance for such mighty drivers !

They don''t care even to give way to fire engines taking a call in the greatest emergency. The experience in the fire at Trade Centre at Balmatta where ax express bus rudely shouted at the fire engine staff andovertook it, is very recent. In case the RTO means business it is possible to make the drivers law abiding if not, the conclusion is obvious!

Mr. Fernandies, RTO has no time to listen to people like you and general public. They are very busy makiking money(side)! God bless the general public. One day will be ours! RTO officials know the rules that can protect them. If misses, they have politicians. They have paid heafty sum to get the job. Little more to save the job! They need to work hard to save the job! General public need to contribute to save their job. nobody has extra time!!!!

The reckless driver should be given similar type of death. This will be a lesson to all express and local busses. High time RTO works on this.

There is no end in sight for the recklessness. Every day Highway NH 17 claims more and more people and the reckless drivers run away laughinh all the way. Our police system is simply incompetent and useless. They are unable to control the traffic, much less, if anything else.

The City corporation should start Traffic Police Force to institute law and order and each bus company must be taxed to pay the wages for the traffic police force. They shall have the power to arrest and file criminal cases against any offesive violating driver. Then only citizens can walk around without being killed.

This is one more repeated incident of reckless driving. Unless & untill the Police & RTO does smothing serious in nature to punish these reckless bus drivers accidents will continue and innocent people will be injured & killled including damage of property.

Any compensation for a deceased or injured person will be decided by the MACT, Court. I feel soory for the person who lost his life due to reckless driving of the bus driver. May his soul rest in peace.
