Mangalore: Vittal College Principal Alleged of Adopting Anti-Kannada Stand

Mangalore, Aug 16: The district unit of Kannada Sahitya Parishad (KSP) has urged Kannada Development Authority (KDA) to initiate disciplinary action against Vittal First Grade College principal for allegedly adopting anti-Kannada stand.

In a letter to KDA chairman Mukhyamantri Chandru, KSP district president Pradeep Kumar Kalkura has alleged that prof Laila Mary George discontinued Kannada as an optional language for students in the college despite students willing to study the language. The decision to discontinue Kannada was taken much before admissions, it is alleged.

Kalkura has further stated in the letter that the principal had written (in a letter dated-May 16, 2009) to the department of collegiate education seeking permission from the department to discontinue Kannada as an optional language from 2009-10 and to introduce Hindi instead. Principal has further justified her decision by stating that only five students had opted for Kannada in the previous academic year, he cited in the letter.

However, the department had directed the college in a letter dated August 6 to continue teaching the subject as it was the language of the state. Following this few students attended Kannada classes. But, Kalkura further alleged in his letter that principal soon discouraged such students from attending the classes and also said that enrolment list sent to Mangalore University was rejected and thus they could not study the subject.

Kalkura has demanded to initiate disciplinary action against the principal for not informing the head of the Kannada department, college development committee and also deputy commissioner who heads District Kannada Implementation Committee.

Karnataka represents a language, that is KANNADA. But India is not represented by any one particular language. It is not necessary to know hindi to be an Indaian, but it becomes compulsory to know KANNADA if you stay in Karnataka, Because Karanataka is the place of KANNADIGA''s. The same thing cannot be misinterpretted as India is the place of hindian''s. I aggree with you that the language is there to communicate with each other, then it would be better for hindians to communicate with others in KANNADA or in the language of the respective states they live. I am an INDIAN, I''am, an INDIAN only as a KANNADIGA.

Karnataka was formed for Kannadigas. If people dont like kannada then they are free to move out. You have no right to question the existence of kannada in karnataka. BTW, although I can understand Hindi to some extent it has never come to use for me all these 35 years of living in india and abroad. Ofc I dont watch junk bollywood movies.

My parents, grandparents, children dont know even an iota of hindi, so are we not indian nationals then, eh? what loads of junk !! I am a kannadiga and me being one is more than enough to be indian. If somebody can challenge that I better be a kannadiga than a h-indian. kannada has a rich and culture heritage of more than 2000 years. hindi is not even 300 years old.. hindi is nothing but 80% urdu.. bowing to hindi is like bowing to muslim marauders like we did for 100s of years. sirigannadam gelge, sirigannadam baalge

To be an Indian one need not know Hindi. Similarly to live in Karnataka one need not speak Kannada. People need not show love to a particular language and hate others in the name of language. After all language is there to communicate each other and not for hating each other.

@ shahnawaz, Read constitution. HINDI IS NOT OUR NATIONAL LANGUAGE. Hindi is spoken by North Indians and does not constitute majority. If majority is the criteria then HINDUISM should be made the National Religion and CROW and RAT will be our National Bird & Animal Respectively

@ Nagarajendranath, Please read constitution of India. ALL INDIAN LANGUAGES ARE NATIONAL LANGUAGES and not just HINDI alone. There is no necessity to use HINDI being an Indian. If that is made mandatory to be an Indian then I would prefer not to be an Indian. I will remain loyal to India as long Indian constitution respect the existence of Karnataka and Kannada. Without these India is nothing to me.

Shahnawaz kukkikatte - It does looks like that you seems to hate sanskrit just because some section of hindus may have used to monopolize and exploit the masses centuries or decades back...Well that is not a sound argument becoz then it is like backing our linguistic fanatics who wants to ban english because british ruled us for centuries..

In fact this is right time to bring and popularize Sanskrit among common folks, dalits and minorities so that people understand and appreciate the rich history behind it.Hey how about banning URDU since INDIA(Majority hindus) were exploited by certain rulers for centuries and who spoke that language primarily? Regarding your last question just like you don''t need to be a artist to appreciate arts same here with sanskrit.

Mr Pramod/USA, Thanks for your reply. Sanskrit is vedic language and has rich history. But unfortunately, one section of Hindu community has monopoly over this language and use this language to misguide and oppress the general public in social and religious spheres... Secondly all langauages too teach good morale and not sanskrit alone. By the way do you speak sanskrit in USA....?

Mr shahnawaz kukkikatte - Your pose for Sanskrit is akin to asking why english should be taught in india when it is not spoken as a mother tongue by any state and by any group. Well there are other reasons that explains why English needs to be taught in schools and colleges. either it shows your ignorance about the rich history of Sanskrit or shows your prejudice against this ancient language that has a history and rich culture that dates back to time when this great country "Bharat" was conceptualized.

Sanskrit as a language is a optional language and not being forced on anyone in India. There are merits in introducing sanskrit which is a historical Indo-Aryan language, one of the liturgical languages of Hinduism and Buddhism,[2] and one of the 22 official languages of India. Its position in the cultures of South and Southeast Asia is akin to that of Latin and Greek in Europe and it has significantly influenced most modern languages of Nepal and India.[4] The pre-Classical form of Sanskrit is known as Vedic Sanskrit, with the language of the Rigveda being the oldest and most archaic stage preserved, its oldest core dating back to as early as 1500 BCE,[5] qualifying Rigvedic Sanskrit as one of the oldest attestation of any Indo-Iranian language, and one of the earliest attested members of the Indo-European language family.[6] The corpus of Sanskrit literature encompasses a rich tradition of poetry and drama as well as scientific, technical, philosophical and Hindu religious texts. Today, Sanskrit continues to be widely used as a ceremonial language in Hindu religious rituals in the forms of hymns and mantras. Symbolic usage In the Republic of India, in Nepal and Indonesia, Sanskrit phrases are widely used as mottoes for various educational and social organizations (much as Latin is used by some institutions in the West).

The motto of the Republic is also in Sanskrit. Republic of India Satyameva Jayate "Truth alone triumphs" Nepal Janani Janmabhūmisca Svargādapi garīyasi "Mother and motherland are greater than heaven" Goa Sarve Bhadrāni Paśyantu Mā Kaścid Duhkhabhāg bhavet "May all perceive good, may not anyone attain unhappiness" Life Insurance Corporation of India Yogakshemam Vahāmyaham "I shall take care of welfare" (taken from the Bhagavad Gita) Indian Navy Shanno Varuna "May Varuna be peaceful to us" Indian Air Force Nābha Sparsham Dīptam "Touch the Sky with Glory" Mumbai Police sadrakshanaaya cahlaaha nighranayah "For protection of the good and control of the wicked" Indian Coast Guard Vayam Rakshāmaha "We protect" All India Radio Bahujana-hitāya bahujana-sukhāya "For the benefit of all, for the comfort of all" Indonesian Navy Jalesveva Jayamahe "On the Sea We Are Glorious" Aceh Province Pancacita "Five Goals"

Yes I agree that Kannade is State Language of Karnataka we must respect. Its means we can not say Kannada is a major language for India. Being a Indian we should use Hindi, and Hindi is a National Language. In generally in India we use Hindi or English so we have to give a special importance in it not in Kannada.

To pass and go get higher scores in PUC or Degree or Postgraduation we must know good English. So according to my views in India Govt should Consider English as a Major language rather then Kannada. Kannada is a useless language in study level. Ok its a spoken language then no problem but in the colleages Kannada is not essential.

Yes I agree. Kannada is state language of Karnataka and must be respected and should not be discontinued. Secondly Kannada is mandatory language upto 10th standard and then its optional. Hindi is national language and there is no harm is pursuing Hindi. Now can any one tell me sanskrit is which state''s langauge and why its there on the list of optional languages. Hindi is spoken by the majority of Indians and Kannada by kannadigas, but sanskrit by whom? I have not heard any one speaking in sanskrit as their mother tongue? If some one has contradictory view please write in this forum.....
