Mangalore, Aug 18: In a surprise inspection, MP Nalin Kumar found out about the utter apathy with which the Food Corporation of India functions. During his visit to the central warehouse located at Mannagudda in the city, here on Tuesday August 18 morning, he found to his utter dismay, that food grains were carelessly being handled and allowed to rot.

The stocks of about 40 lac kilograms of wheat stored in 78,349 bags of 50 kilograms each and 3,000 tonnes of rice, dispatched from Punjab during 2007 and 2008, which was found stored in the central warehouse at Mannagudda, here was found to have been spoiled by pests and eaten away by rats.  The entire stock of food grains, worth over Rs 5 crore, that was found stored in the central warehouse, was found to be unfit for human consumption. He found that the warehouse also lacked adequate ventilation and the stock was exposed to heat and moisture.

The stock of grains, that was meant for being supplied to ration shops and for usage during contingencies, is stored at the central warehouse, here.

In the backdrop of various complaints received from the residents of the neighbouring apartments, MP Nalin Kumar arrived at the warehouse, to inspect the situation there.  Those residing in the neighbouring apartment blocks had complained to the MP that the insects from the  central warehouses are visible from their flats and they had also been invading the neighbouring areas. They had suspected that the stock of grains in the warehouse had been spoilt.

MP Nalin was accompanied by BJP district president Monappa Bhandary and central warehouse in-charge R Lal during the visit.

Not that you''ve done a favor on country by visiting here but you''ve done your work which others are not so upright for - Appreciate your work which does not stop here , look at the injustice happening in mangalore - destruction of churches, masjid, killings of innocent religious preachers , ban on modest dress codes - all these are on raise especially after BJP in in power - be just to all otherwise you see the signs that BJP is getting destroyed brick by brick as you did for places of worship.

Ravi Kadri is absolutely right. But disagree so far as literary knowledge. It is essential for our MPs which is sadly lacking.

Dear Nalin Kumar, if you wish to grow as a leader make sure that the officials responsible for the waste of food grains made accountable and made to pay for the wastage. Only then government officials will take their job seriously. Dear Christopher & Siva Avadani, before you question our MP''s academic qualification, please make sure you find out the qualification of Congress leaders such as Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi.

You could easily find answer thro'' Google search. Let me remind you guy''s that only literary knowledge is not an education or qualification to be an Leader, whether it is Nalin Kumar or Rahul Gandhi.

What a criminal waste of precious food grains. It is an irony when hundreds and thousands of people are going hungry in our country every day, tens of thousands of tons of food grains get rotten and eaten away by pests in our government controlled warehouses just because of utter carelessness and irresponsibility of highly paid people managing these warehouses at FCI. Well done, Mr.MP atleast you have tried to bring the issue to light.

Can we people expect now from you some concrete action to fix this problem and get the responsible people accountable for the loss of food grains costing crores of rupees.?????? Not sure ... this could be another political drama to show the people around that our elected leaders are really concerned about the people who voted them for power... while the hungry and poor still remain more hungrier and poorer day by day. God Bless our democracy !.

There is a saying in tulu " Kulith pondala.. kolth povare balli". This statement holds good for our governments attitude. After sometime, Our CM starts crying for food grains from the centre and blame centre for not providing enough grains..

It is an irony that when the country is facing drought situation and many households are going without two square meals a day, foodgrains meant to meet such situations is rotting in the FCI godowns and lot of money is spent on it''s storage and maintenance staff. Ultimately, we do not know what happens to the crores worth of food after some time when they become unfot for human consumption.

There is no use in the governmentt''s claim that we have buffer stock of foodgrains to meet emergencies. Is there no way out in maintaining foodgrains in a more clean and hygienic environment? Hope the MP follows up this matter for a better management of scarce resources.
