Bengaluru: State government announces list of holidays for 2020

Bengaluru, Nov 23: The state government has brought out a list of official holidays for the year 2020. As some of these holidays fall on Sundays as well as second and fourth Saturdays, the government employees will be deprived of them.

Additional secretary in the department of personnel and administrative reforms released the list of holidays on behalf of the state government on Friday November 22. In addition to the listed holidays, employees will also have holidays on all Sundays, second and fourth Saturdays of every month.

As Republic Day, Basava Jayanthi, Akshaya Tritiya, Moharrum, Ayudha Puja, Kannada Rajyotsava, Naraka Chaturdashi, and Ganesha Chaturthi fall on Sundays and/or second and fourth Saturdays, they have not been included in the list.

The government said that the deputy commissioner of Kodagu district will have powers to declare holidays form local festivals in that distrit. A separate list of holidays will be issued for educational institutions, it stated.

List:

January 15 - Sankranthi, February 21 - Shivaratri, March 25 -Ugadi, April 6 - Mahaveer Jayanthi, April 10 - Good Friday, April 14 - B R Ambedkar Jayanthi, Aplril 25 - Basava Jayanthi, May 1 - May Day, May 25 - Ramzan, August 1 - Bakrid, August 15 - Independence Day, September 17 - Mahalaya Amavasya, October 2 - Gandhi Jayanthi, October 26 - Vijayadashami, October 30 - Eid Milad, October 31 - Valmiki Jayanthi, November 16 - Deepavali, December 3 - Kanaka Jayanthi, December 25 - Christmas.

Republic Day (January 26), Basava Jayanthi/Akshaya Tritiya (April 4), Moharrum (August 8), Ganesha Chaturthi (Aguust 12), Ayudha Puja (October 25), Kannada Rajyosava (November 1), Naraka Chaurdashi (November 14) are not included in the list as they fall on Sundays or second and fourth Saturdays, the department said.

    Christians and Muslims live in a country whose majority believes in Hinduism, and as I analysed the list of holidays, 2 for Catholics and 3 for Muslims are not disproportionate to 5 for Hindu holydays. Most of the others are either for national events, such as Independence Day, or Jayantis, including Mahavir Jain's and Mahatma Gandhi's; thank God Tipu was not included in the latter (or, for that matter, Godse as Jossey quipped).).

    It does not matter if the Government employees are deprived of few holidays.....Otherwise also what is their contribution, other than corruption in the name of their superiors.....??????

    Almost nowhere in the World the Nativity (Sept. 8) is a holy day of obligation, not even a working holy day (the Church makes a distinction) . On the other hand, the solemnity of Mary Mother of God is a holy day of obligation under the Canonical rules and many Catholic countries observe it as such (of course, it is the 1st of January, the beginning of the New Year and a public holiday). To cater to a small community of Mangalorean Catholics and Goan Catholics, there is no case. If the Diocese wants to make it a holy day, by all means, make it a working holy day and adjust mass times to enable the faithful to attend the service; they can feast after mass. The feast of Assumption (Dec. 8) is a holy day of obligation, but no one agitates for it in Mangalore!

    Nativity of Mother Mary (Monthi fest) is a regional feast celebrated by coastal Karnataka coinciding with first crop of the season. Hence, we bless fresh rice corns and consume as God's blessings on that day.
    It is up to the authorities in governance (power) to decide rules on holidays. Faithful will celebrate their feasts anyway. May God bless all to remain faithful to Him.
