Reveal extent of ill-gotten wealth of Indians: Pranab

New Delhi, Nov 26 (IANS): A forceful plea for revealing the extent of ill-gotten wealth, held by Indians in the country and abroad, was made by former President Pranab Mukherjee here on Tuesday, saying unless it was done, the economy would suffer and the common people would feel the pinch.

Why reports by three agencies, tasked by me just before I stepped down in 2012 as the Finance Minister to contest the presidential poll were not made public "the government should explain to me", he said at the launch of "The Panama Papers" on the Indian end of the probe by three Indian Express journalists of the global probe into corruption by the high and the mighty.

"I had doubts about the exact quantum of unaccounted money overseas. Very ficticious figures were rolled out -- sometimes not so high and sometimes astronomically high. So I decided to dedicate three agencies to help me study the problem and quantify the amount of money operating here and operating abroad.

"These were the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, the National Council of Applied Economic Research and the National Institute of Financial Management," he said.

They were asked to submit their reports at the end of their two-year tenure. "But I didn't get the reports because I had resigned. But I'm told the reports have been submitted, but not yet been made public. Why they have not yet been made public, the government should explain to me," the former President said.

"A white paper was published, which gave substantial information about the operation (of black money) and the extent but not the quantum....Those who are operating, if they win...blackmarketers and foreign exchange manipulators...then the economy fails and the common people feel the pinch," Mukherjee said.

India as a responsible nation state should continue to ensure that external trade was facilitated and an investment environment was generated by shielding genuine foreign exchange transactions from fraudulent and undesireable, he said and added, effective measures against money laundering and terror financing was essential in today's global economy. "Such measures also foster legitimate investments and financial flows," Mukherjee said.

Mukherjee complimented the authors -- Ritu Sarin, Jay Mojoomdaar and P. Vaidyanathan Iyer -- for bringing out the book "after a great deal of investigation".

"This book is not just an account of the global investigation, but also forms a ready reckoner for young journalists of how an investigation into such a massive story should be done.

"At a time when a large section of the media in India appears to be reticent toward putting tough questions to the powers that be, this book is a perfect reminder to shed that restraint," Mukherjee said.

Reveal extent of ill-gotten wealth of Indians.
Looks like, such gimmicks were made just to send bad message in the minds of voters to win the elections or the holders of black money are closely associated with the ruling party.
Why the secrets are being kept as secret.?????

Let Modi ask his own conscience why the names of ill-gotten wealth of Indians not yet been disclosed.
Why he made false promises ? Being a PM he must convince the people with the facts and figures of Black money operation. To blame congress rule he is the first and to disclose black money facts he is last. why fooling public with Fake claims.

Mr. Mukharji, you had a complete term as the Prez of the nation, why didn't you question it then ? Your questioning then would have been more powerful, than pleading that it-sounds-like now. You are aware that Modi did taann---taaannn-- in 2014 about the Gandhi family having money in Swiss Bank which affected Congress adversely and helped Modi in winning the elections. Modi promised to bring it back within 100 days of coming to power. Your action would have stopped BJP from growing bigger by deceit and Congress shrinking further would have averted.

Why did you keep quiet during your term as a President ? Why do you want the answers now ? How will it help you ? You are retired, please continue resting, do not take more stress.

Modi won the second term because of fools like you. Look at the MP from Karnataka - does he deserve to be on the position he is ? A man who has been in the Parliament for two complete terms yet can't utter a complete sentence in Hindi ? The reason he got elected a third time is because you people have no guts to question Modi if his '100 days' are not yet complete. Because you BJP slaves did not question him why the black money is not yet back. Because you guys have no guts to question who donated so much for the party funds that the reserves of the party swelled (but the nation's economy shrunk) and if it was black, or white.

You guys only count how much assets Sonia Gandhi got, how much Rahul Gandhi got but you fools forget to note that Modi increased the income of MPs to 200% - both SG/RG were MPs. That's not all, a MP gets pension for lifetime, upon completing his/her term which these both are entitled to

Learn doing plus-minus before breaking head to put together Gandhi family's wealth that gets pension from Indira and Rajiv, both who died while on service. Could you guys gather guts to stop that income ? Try it !
