Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Sep 26: Heavy rain that lashed the city and most other places in the twin-districts since Friday September 25 evening, put paid to enthusiasm of the people of the district, who were out to celebrate Navaratri with worships and cultural programmes. Make-shift pandals had been erected at most places and the idols of Goddess Sharada had been installed on Friday September 25, adding further to the scale of celebrations. However, the intermittent showers through out the day turned into heavy down-pour late evening and night on Friday, forcing people to stay indoors. Occasional lightning and thunder added to the plight of the people, who had to do without power for a major part of the night, as electricity supply got severed in many places.

Kollur recorded a rainfall of 14 cms, which was the highest in the state. The monsoon, which was expected to weaken, remained strong on Thursday and Friday. Places like Bangalore, Karkala, Puttur, Beltangady, Udupi, Sullia, Bantwal,  Dharmastala etc., got good rains. Because of heavy rains, several bridges on the roads leading to Subrahmanya got inundated, bringing the traffic on these roads to a halt on Friday evening.  The minor bridges located at Kaikamba, Kidu and Nettana remained under water for long time, affecting the vehicular traffic.
