Mangalore, Oct 1: Students who pass the supplementary examination to complete the five-year LLB course offered by Mangalore University will still get marks cards that show in which class they have passed.

The Academic Council of the university here on Wednesday withdrew the restriction on awarding classes — pass, second, first and first class with distinction — to students who fail in their first attempt, but pass subsequently.

Though the rule existed in statute, it has never been implemented. When the university tried to implement the rule in 2008-09sought to know why the rule did not apply to students of other courses.

This rule was not applicable to students who completed BA, B.Sc. or other courses through supplementary examinations. Later, it was found that the Board of Studies in Law had inadvertently incorporated the clause, despite law teachers being members of the Board.

Following objections, the board in a meeting decided to recommend the rule’s withdrawal. The Academic Council meeting on Wednesday resolved to rectify the “mistake” committed by the board and made the suitable amendments. University Vice-Chancellor K.M. Kaveriappa, who presided over the meeting, said that the amended regulations would be sent for Government approval.
