Udupi: Artshine 2009 - Intercollegiate Cultural Fest at Milagres College

Udupi, Oct 21: The department of humanities association, Milagres College, Kallianpur, under the convenership of Prof Melwin C Rego, head of the department of sociology of the college, organized a two-day intercollegiate cultural fest, 'Artshine 2009' with the theme, Karnataka Darshana, on October 14 and 15, for the benefit of the BA and BSW students of Mangalore University. The fest included cultural competitions relating to the state of Karnataka, such as folk songs, dances of Karnataka, skit competition on the historical events and collage on 'Karnataka Today', exhibition of artifacts of Karnataka, quiz etc. The event was a grand success with more than ten teams from different colleges taking part in it with over 250 students.
The fest was inaugurated by Vinay Kumar Sorake, former MP, by releasing water from the miniature Jog Falls. He congratulated the Humanities Association for choosing a wonderful theme for the competition, i.e., Karnataka Darshana. He stressed that the state of Karnataka is a beautiful state endowed with bounties of nature, and laid emphasis on the need to utilize these resources effectively for the progress of the state. He also said that Karnataka has multicultural population as compared to the neighbouring states. Karnataka Darshana gives a picture of the culture of the state in its entirety, he stated.
Prof Melwin Rego, organizer of the fest, spoke on the occasion. He briefed about the objectives for choosing the theme, 'Karnataka Darshana'. He also informed that this theme had been selected, much before it was announced by the Karnataka home minister, Dr V S Acharya towards having a vision for the development of Karnataka by 2020. Prof Hilda Rodgrigues, convener of Humanities Association, felicitated the organizers and the students for carrying forward the great tradition of arts faculty in organizing the intercollegiate fest.
The principal, Fr Fred Mascarenhas, congratulated the organizers for organizing such a great event and appreciated the creativity of the students. Loylees of III BA compered the programme. Fameeda, student organizer, proposed the vote of thanks and Vikas, one of the student organizers, was at the dais.
A NCC cadet, Sushmitha J, was felicitated on this occasion for attending ATS Camp at New Delhi.
Pramod Madhwaraj, an industrialist from Malpe, was the chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony. He recalled experiences of his student days in organizing such fests and called upon the student delegates to make use of such opportunities to develop their talents.
Pramod Madhwaraj distributed the prizes to the prize winners. Overall championship was awarded to Vaikunta Baliga College of Law, Udupi, while Poorna Prajna College, Udupi secured the runners-up trophy.
