Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Oct 29: The sudden rains that drenched the coastal belts late evening on Wednesday October 28 came as a bolt from the blue for the farmers of the twin-districts. The farmers, who were hopeful of harvesting their crops, which have already been affected by the late rains earlier, have become a worried lot with the sudden rain.

The city as well as Mulky, Moodbidri, Ullal, Puttur, Beltangady, Ujire, Dharmastala, Kadaba, Vittal, Subrahmanya, Kundapur, Udupi, Karkala and Sullia got good rains. Power supply was snapped in places like Sullia and Subrahmanya, as lightning and strong winds accompanied the rains. In the city, there were frequent interruptions in power supply.  Chikmagalur and Kasargod districts too got rains.

Sources in the meteorological department attributed the rains to the wide flucatuation in temperatures. The region experienced extremely hot weather with humidity on Wednesday. The power supply cables and equipments of a home belonging to Basava Mogaveera near Tekkatte, Kundapur, were burnt because of lightning. Flames were witnessed in a transformer and a nearby coconut tree at Manipal. The fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire. Several minor accidents occurred in the city and elsewhere, as visibility was severely affected.
