Bengaluru: Survey says 1,675 destitute persons eat everyday at Indira Canteens

Bengaluru, Feb 18: National Urban Livelihoods Mission survey has revealed that out of about 4,000 persons spread over 198 wards of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) identified as destitute, 1,675 have food in Indira Canteens.

BBMP had conducted ward -wise surveys during November last under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission. During the survey, it had transpired that the city had a total of 4,158 destitute persons. The survey of the destitute contained tier names, how long will they be in the city, why did they leave homes, government documents they hold, food, use of toilets, ailments, mental disabilities if any etc. About the question on food, 1,675 have said they have relied on Indira Canteens set up by BBMP for their daily food.

As many as 925 said they have food in hotels while 125 depend on places where free food is given. A total of 192 are dependent on marriage halls and temples while 661 eat by preparing food themselves by the roadside and other places. In the case of 580, they did not provide information about food, BBMP officials stated.

    Very sad that the Indira canteen facilities which was providing subsidised food to the destitutes, workers, students etc is being denied food just because of petty politics. The tears of the poor will be upon on the decision makers who have denied them their bread.

    Our hearts go out to less fortunate people. Identify these poor people and give them subsidy rather than waste money on these canteens. If it is giving employment to people in the canteen its fine, otherwise lot of money is being wasted just in the name of the destitute people.
    We are not against less fortunate people, but why we have spent crores and keep swindling lakhs of Rupees in the name of feeding the destitute people? Tell the voters, how much money is being spent everyday while telling us how many eat in the Indira canteens.

    But BJP has more urgent programs like CAA, NRC etc. forget about poor and starving people. Spending over 100 crores on Trump who is disliked by all world leaders except one. Trump recently publicly said and was recorded in media that India was cheating America.

    These poor people who eat at Indira Canteens should be grateful to Siddaramaih for opening such eateries. While I don't support the former CM for organising Tippu Jayanti, he deserves credit for coming to the help of the needy. I hope the present government continues the good work done by Siddaramaih.

    Though it is copied from Tamil Nadu late CM Jayalitha's 'Amma Canteen' ,I appreciate former CM Siddarmaiah of the Congress party for poor peoples' initiative program that serves the need of the hunger masses.

    I hope this Orphaned Indira Canteens will not starve to death in Bengaluru as uncertainty looms large over the future of Indira Canteens due to lack of funds released by the ruling BJP government.

    More Indira Canteens need to be opened. Many approved slots are still lying unexecuted because of the luke warm attitude of the current ruling government. When will the Canteen come up in Belthangady? I am eagerly waiting?
