Mangalore: Assault on Students – Accused Escape from Hospital

Mangalore, Nov 17: The four youths, said to be Bajrang Dal activists, who were arrested in connection with the assault on three boys and two girls, who were coming to Mangalore to participate in a practice session connected with a tournament they were to participate in, on Sunday November 15, have escaped. They fled from Wenlock Hospital, where they had been admitted into, on Monday November 16 evening.
On Sunday afternoon, Yedapadav PU College students, Rizwan from Addoor, Rashid from Kuppepadav, Mohammed Sadiq from Kaikamba Kandavar and two girl students were assaulted while coming in a bus. A gang had intercepted the bus the students were travelling in, near Vamanjoor, and forced the students to get down, before assaulting them. A huge crowd had gathered there, giving rise to tensions.

On Monday, as per the directions of the Panambur deputy superintendent of police (DySP), Girish, Mangalore rural police station sub-inspector, Prakash, had taken into custody, Sudhakar, Janardan, Sampat and Mohan, who had by then, got admitted into Wenlock Hospital, relating to the incident, alleging that they were beaten up. After the Bajrang Dal activists, led by Monappa Bhandary and Jagadish Shenava, took the medical officer of Wenlock Hospital to task for allowing the policemen to take custody of the four men without being discharged, the medical officer promised them that the four would be admitted into the hospital again.
On Monday evening, the policemen brought the four men back to the hospital. The hospital was about to prepare their discharge papers, when they reportedly escaped, by mingling with a group of hundreds of Bajrang Dal activists, who had gathered there. In this connection, DySP Girish said that the policemen will find out the whereabouts of the accused and arrest them soon.
