Udupi, Mar 15: Bishop of Udupi diocese Dr Gerald Issac Lobo on Sunday March 15 issued guidelines to the faithful to protect themselves from coronavirus and urged them not to panic.
"Even though coronavirus has spread across the globe, misinformation about the disease has spread wider. There have been many other diseases which have spread in the past and caused a greater loss than this one, but there was never a fear as great as this among the people. Considering the present situation and to join hands with the administration in controlling the spread of this disease, (appropriate) measures should be taken by the faithful," the bishop said.
He stated that no one should panic unnecessarily. "Fear is more terrible than the virus. The almighty God has always been with us. Nothing happens without His permission. Let us all pray to God for the ones who are suffering from this disease. Let us include the prayers for the sufferers in our Eucharistic adoration and during the Eucharistic celebrations.
"Sanitization goes a long way in preventing spread of the disease. Let us all try to keep our churches, homes and institutions clean. For this reason, holy water stands inside the church will be empty for some days. People should receive holy communion only on their hands and not on the tongue. Those suffering from cough, fever and other problems should keep themselves away from religious activities. Proper care should be taken during confessions," he added.
"If the current situation continues till the Holy Week, then on Good Friday no one should kiss the Holy Cross during the blessings. All should practice 'Namaste' instead of shaking hands. Personal hygiene like washing hands frequently, avoiding touching the nose and mouth, avoiding contact with suspected patients must be followed," the bishop stated.
"Postpone unnecessary large gatherings in homes and wards. Spread awareness about the disease with the help of the health department. Follow the guidelines issued by the state and central governments," he urged.
The bishop also sent a circular regarding the same to all the churches of the diocese. He has also advised people staying abroad not to return to India. In some churches during the Eucharistic celebrations priests had informed people to stay safe.

Tue, Mar 17 2020I totally agree.. Any sort of gathering will only lead to transmission of virus. Unless we break this chain of transmission, we are in for trouble. I sincerely request clergy to take prompt action and conduct masses behind closed doors and video telecast of mass can be done through local channels like Daijiworld for the sake of laymen.
