Mangaluru, Mar 17: The repair work of the 68-year-old Kulur Bridge has begun. From March 17, the new Kulur bridge is open for two way traffic. However, heavy congestion was seen on the first day. Especially in the morning hours, people were stuck on the bridge for a long time due to heavy traffic density.

J R Arad and Construction Pvt Ltd is undertaking the repair works for National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

In a notification, Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh instructed district police and traffic department to do all necessary arrangements to ensure safety of the motorists who are plying on the bridge.

As per notification, two-way traffic will be allowed on Kulur new bridge. Only light vehicles, 6-wheel goods vehicles and buses which are plying on Udupi-Mangaluru route, are allowed on the new bridge. Containers and bullet tankers, cranes, and trailers are completely prohibited on the new bridge.

Heavy vehicles moving between Udupi and Bengaluru and from Bengaluru towards MRPL can move via Padubidri-Karkala road. Heavy vehicles coming from Udupi can travel on Mulki-Moodbidri road and vehicles from Haleyangadi can move via Kinnigoli- Moodbridri road towards Surathkal and Bajpe.

LOUSY? it is one of the best bridges of its size.

The fact that it has been able to withstand the kind of traffic for which it was not meant for, speaks volumes about the soundness of its construction. I am aware that it is fashionable to berate things Indian with American colloquialisms and draw comparison with Dubai and such other Arab Las vagases. The fault lay in not restricting our population growth, the Chinese way and imparting a nation building kind of education. But it's all so much water under the bridge.

Probably for the first time this beautiful bridge being repaired in 68 years. That's because it was built during the days there was no corruption. Poor quality of roads and bridges have hampered the development and cost of living through vehicle maintenance due to bad roads. God save India from looters of public money!
