Mangalore: Decision to Run Train to Kannur was Political - Railway Passenger Committee

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Nov 21: President of West Coast Railway Passenger Development Committee, Hanumanth Kamath, has alleged that the railways had taken a decision at the Inter Railway Time Table Conference (IRTTC) held at Bangalore on January 27, 2009, to extend the night train to city from Bangalore up to Karwar.  In support of his claim, he has presented a copy of the minutes of the said conference of IRTTC, obtained under the Right to Information Act, where a decision on the time schedule for running the train up to Karwar, was taken. Officials however, have remarked that no decision was taken at the Board level on this decision.

He has pointed out that the train has been diverted to Kannur in Kerala instead of Karwar, although it does not serve much purpose, and in spite of the fact that there was no demand for it. Kamath has alleged that this decision, which is in violation of the earlier decision of the railways, was taken because of political interference.

He has informed that a delegation of the Committee will meet the railway minister at Delhi to demand justice. If the railway finds it impossible to change the decision, the delegation will prevail on the minister to run the train up to Karwar on four days in a week, and to Kannur on the remaining three days. Alternatively, he has suggested to split the 18-compartment train into two trains of nine compartments each on reaching Mangalore, and to run them to Karwar and Kannur respectively.

People from coastal Karnataka, do not have a direct access to their state capital. Extension of Bangalore - Mangalore train to Karwar is the need of the hour. I wish GOOD LUCK to the people / organisations like RAILWAY YATHRI SANGHA who are strugling to ACHIEVE THIS.

Let a portion of the Bangalore train run to kannur, another portion run to Karwar. Let the day train run on all the days. Let railways start one more night train thru' Hassan Arsikere ( not thru' Mysore.) Let the much publicised passenger train from mangalore to shravanabalegola start in the next session. In all let more trains start and at the same time let them start the survey / planning for the second line from Mangalore to Bangalore since this route will be commercially so viable and profitable.

There is no problem for people who do not travel in train. But if you are a train traveller then you would know for sure. Among the traffic between Bangalore and Mangalore, nearly one third is constituted by people from the region between mangalore and Bhatkal. This fact can be ascertained by the number of busses that ply between bangalore and cities like Udupi, kundapur, Byndoor, Kollur, Bhatkal, manipal, karkala, moodubidri etc.

All these people would definitely benefit by the extension to Karwar. Moreover, if you are a fan of malabar region, then you have enough passenger services from mangalore (MAQ) and also you already have a direct connection from Yeshwanthpur to Kannur thrice weekly which takes lesser time and the concerned people have already palnning to make it daily. Also this can easily be extended to Mangalore if you are really worried about the people north of Kannur! In such a scenario, why would you rob the people of coastal karnataka of their legitimate demand?
